So, I just finished MGS4, an awesome awesome game, and I thought, how did everyone else play it, then it led to this question.
What, is your preferred "stealthy" way, in any game?

For me, and that tarantula (Kill over 250 enemies while being detected less then 25 times.) award confirmed it, it's killing my enemy silently and efficiently, while keeping a low profile, the weapon of choice is knives and silenced weapons, preferably sniper rifles.

So, what is your "stealthy" way? Please explain beyond the vote.

No one knows I'm there. If it wasn't for the corpses, no one ever would. Even then, they don't know where I came from or even if I'm still around.

MGS4 wasn't a good example of the typical stealth game because of the whole 'no place to hide' thing Kojima did with it. Still, sneakiness is the main goal.

I have beaten MGS4 at least 4 times, did a play through on Big Boss Hard with less than 200 kills and only like about 10 alerts. I love the stealth in the MGS series, I liked it better than any Splinter Cell or Thief, although those are great, I'd admit.

But in my opinion, stealth games should not offer you much if any firepower.
boom this guy's got it.

With too much (any?) firepower, you lose all incentive to sneak. it's like "why should I memorise patrols when I can just kill them or knock them out". It spoils the experience of sneaking. plus, it removes the consequences of being caught if you can just shoot your way out.

Hmm no option for the stealth gamer who main skill is running away. I roll, climb, and dodge my way to victory, or at least the next screen where for some reason the guards stop chasing you. Sure I might be missing the point but it is a lot more enjoyable for me in that way.

I went "Ultimate Ninja" because when I'm playing a game typically stealth is simply a means to the end of killing someone, or doing something to enable me to kill someone more easily. :)

Though there is a lot to be said for the brute force approach as well. As pirates put it "Dead men tell no tales". If you kill everyone, does that not in a way count as stealth? I mean if their all dead and nobody can say you passed through....

If a tree falls in the forest and nobody is there to hear it, does it make a noise?

I don't particularly like games where you have to be stealthy; I prefer the gameplay to be focused around simply fighting the enemies. That being said, I like to have the option of being stealthy if I want to. If I feel particularly outnumbered or outgunned, I like being able to simply avoid that particular group of enemies. I don't like having stealth forced on me, though.

If I do choose to be stealthy, it's generally to either outright avoid a group of enemies, or to get into a position where I can then wipe them out more easily. In an RPG, for instance, if I can stealth up behind someone, kill them, and then be in a position to fight the rest of the group, I will do so. Stealth is a means to an end for me: its purpose is to make it easier for me to kill my enemies.

I can't help it. I am the person who will walk around in a stealth mode of some sort, or just be hidden in general, then take out the loudest, most unspeakably non-stealthy weapon, and blow/cut some guys head off. Then, I jump back through the portents of invisibility and become a ghost again, waiting for the next poor shmuck to come along and get his head blown off. I reference, in this specific instance, Fallout 3. I would wear the Chinese Stealth suit with sneak up to 100. I would walk around with the sniper rifle (or specialized, rare version) and just dole out harshness at random. That was one of the best afternoons this year.

That is what I think, if I kill them before they even spot me, and they died before they realized I were there, how can not that be stealth?

Running away is a good skill to have, that is what I do when I get seen, if it ain't a stealthy kill, it's not worth it.

From playing the Hitman games, Assassins Creed, Splinter Cell (which I'm still a little annoyed at, stealth in a linear environment *ech*) and Manhunt, I have found that I much prefer to stay in the shadows and only kill when necessary.

Considering that most of these games try their darnedest to cheat through the stealth, Its an accomplishment.

The stealthiest man is the man who has ripped out the eyes, ears, noses and tongues of everyone around him.

I don't play stealth vidjama games cause traditional stealth is for wusses.

My trick is to kill everyone flamboyantly, so that there's no-one left to see me 'sneak' to the objective.

I am sneaky and I try to kill only when it's necessary. But if I am discovered then I go bat shit insane and wake up on a pile of decapitated corpses and blood in my teeth.

Most stealth games reward kills you make. Like in tenchu: wrath of heaven. if thats the case, ill kill as much guards as possible. If not, I only kill anything that hinders the way to my prime target. Or just knock them out if possible.
