After doing the recent survey rating what is important to individuals in the Fable series and reading the comments, I started wondering which Fable game is the Escapist community's favorite in the series and why?

I enjoyed Fable the most.

I only played a little of TLC so I can't really judge that, but I didn't enjoy Fable II much at all. Its felt too easy and simplified. I never felt terribly pressed during any part of the game. Especially the final boss, which was just a laugh and a half. It was generally very unsatisfying for me. And after my time in Fable II, I didn't even bother giving Fable III a sideways glance. It just seemed like they inflated the boring stuff I don't like, such as the property management, and moved further away from my favorite part, which is interesting and unpredictable story events. I can't even recall any events in Fable II.

I personally hate Reaver, but the first game felt too easy to me and the second game had a crap plot and end. The third wins like the one legged kid at a wheelchair free quadriplegic race.

I haven't played Fable III.

I loved and still love the original Fable and the Lost chapters. The extra content gives the lost chapters the edge for me. Fable II is my most hated game of all-time. After seeing the direction they were taking the series, I decided not to even try Fable III.

Honestly, as much as I've wanted to like the fable series, I've always been disappointed by each game that I've played (which was 1 and 2). The games just don't have enough substance to them; I don't care if there are a hundred different NPC that I can interact with if they're all just copy and pasted filler. Seriously, they can't even be counted as characters; there is nothing to them beyond the most basic reactions to your most basic of interactions...

Fable was a fun, if streamlined, RPG with a lot of innovative ideas. Fable 2 took the streamlining too far, taking things away while adding very little. I only played a little of Fable 3, but it seems like Fable 2 but somehow even more streamlined. So yeah, Fable TLC for me.

I guess I can only say Fable III, since it's the only one in the series I've played so far. I'd like to go back and play the earlier ones too, but those are on the back burner along with so many, many other games I can't seem to get to, heh.

Fable, but barely. I love Fable 2 as well. Fable 2 would have been my choice were it not for their mistreatment of Balvarines (why did you nerf the best monster from the first game?) and that horrible scripted cutscene ending.

While Fable 2 & 3 are very nice, they just don't seem right. Lacking something that the first game had. A real sense of adventure, perhaps. A real reason to continue on your quest. The start of the first game seemed to give a much greater motivation than the later games. Being shot out a window and running from a dictator just doesn't quite measure up to running around to do errands for coins to get your sister chocolates, and then seeing the whole town burned to the ground by bandits, your father murdered, and your sister blinded.
Some things were better in the later games, but they don't quite measure up to the first one. They are missing the element that makes a good game into a great one that you just have to finish, and play again.

The Fox and the Grapes.

....oh, you meant THAT kind of Fable. meh, 2 was slightly less that completely grating so we'll go with that.

I've only played Fable 2.
I was having reasonable, if shallow, fun with it, and then suddenly it was over.
The ending really is one of the most jarring endings ever.
And I don't buy that crap about the Shard being the "real final boss".
Just because it's the last one, doesn't mean it's an acceptable final one.
Especially when there's a bit right after where you have to shoot bottles. Wait what?

It had a lot of potential, but there you go.

I did like the humor though. It was quite often hilarious.

I seem to be in the minority of liking every Fable game to the point it is probably in my top 5 game franchises.

As for the question, TLC, purely because I have completed that game 9 times and would go back and complete it again.

I never got into the hype behind the first one, so I enjoyed it immensely. Also is it fair to include lost chapters seeing as it really is just F1 + a few extra missions?

I barely heard the hype, my friend had it, I played it for 30 minutes at this place, then bought it for the PC. I've played Fable: TLC about 10+ times all the way through, and it wasn't until a very recent playthrough that I figured out how to get chest hair and stubble, so now I rarely ever upgrade skill (on PC, a slow-time, physical shield, multi-strike combo can kill everything, and the money glitch can be done easily by being a benevolent, attractive guy, guile isn't necessary).

So yeah, buff, hairy , young (thank you age glitch) hero for me, every time.

Fable 2? Meh. Fable 3? haven't played it, but it looks meh. And the outfits in 2 and 3, just so bleh (and the characters' physical growth? Looks horrible, Fable TLC is where it's at).

Having played Fable 1-3, but not TLC, I have to say my favourite was Fable 2.

Fable was a good game but suffered from things that just ruined the experience for me, like quickly becoming a old and powerful looking character while all the other story characters stayed the same, the mechanics felt simple and I didn't really feel like I was affecting anything.

Fable 2 on the other hand was much better. I felt connected with the world, I could see how (some) decisions affected the world around me. Battle was still simple, but felt more rewarding for some reason I couldn't put my finger on. I just really enjoyed the game, played it through several times with different effects and just squeezed all I could out of the game.

Fable 3, I HATED the "Road to Rule", boring and simplified, I didn't see why I needed experience in order to buy houses and shops something I could do in Fable 2 from the start, but I did enjoy the game up towards the end and the disappointing ending (but then Fable has a history with poor endings), I saved the kingdom with 0 civilians dead and was like "OK that was cool, now what will I get to do?". Tough luck chum that's the end of the game. I really wanted to do more with being King and was so annoyed that all I could do after finishing the main story was a few new quests. I tried to start playing through again with a new character, but I couldn't be bothered with all the BS in-between that I'd put up with first time round. It just seemed like Fable 3 wanted to hold my hand all the way through the game, whereas 2 let me run free and go wild whenever I felt like it.

Fable The Lost Chapters, although I'm still not happy how they nerfed the sword of aeons in it. I've played through it tonnes of times, both the original xbox version and the pc TLC version, and I still find it to be enjoyable. The characters were interesting, and so was the story.

Fable 2 I didn't enjoy at all, the menus were clunky on the xbox, resulting in you having to wait a while. Probably solved now that you can install the game, but still. The story started out good, if a bit similar to the first, and then went downhill. Just when it was about to get good again, they decided to end it. I honestly felt like I'd only played half the game. It left a bad taste in my mouth and the only time I've touched it since is to check something prior to Fable 3's release.

Fable 3 was much more enjoyable. They did streamline it a bit, sure, but the combat was still fairly fun. The story was also improved, and not cut off half way through. Co-op in it was immensly fun too, unlike the one they had in 2 where you couldn't go off the players screen. Still not a scratch on the original, though.

tl;dr:

Fable TLC > Fable 3 > Fable 2

The only reason I still buy Fable games is because I remember how good Fable: TLC was. I suppose it doesn't hurt to hope that it isn't too late for Lionhead to return the Fable series to it's former glory? No?

One can hope, right?

I've only played II and III, but out of them I preferred III. Combat seemed a bit dull at times in II, and the only spell I used was Time so I could teleport towards them. After a while in II I just thought fuck it and gave up doing any bonus things, and just did the story....which was a mega anticlimax (not that there was much of a climax to begin with).

As for III, I'm currently playing it. I've done the main story now but I still feel motivated to get the bonus stuff, which I didn't in II.

Whatever you say about the games, you cannot fault their voice acting and sense of humour. There are often times in it when I have giggled out loud at something a gnome or villager has said. And the amount of brilliant English actors is....brilliant.
