Yeah, you can see a few of these games showing up even though technically they were made before 2000, but I'm counting them in mainly because they got to see a re-release later, so they count.
I'm sorry I couldn't add more fighting games like Blazeblue, KOF, Guilty Gear, Mortal Kombat and a few other mainly because there isn't a enough room on the poll to do so.

I've played all the games mentioned inside the poll and outside the poll. I actually love quite a few of the games I've listed on the poll and I actually despise one game from the poll.
So let's shoot for the ugly duckling, I hate street fighter. I really, really hate Street Fighter, all the games. I could go into further reasons as to why I dislike the franchise but I could write a book about it so I'll just name the things that pop into my head and you make use of it.

Not good for new players

Abnormally cheap AI (I know this counts for a lot of other fighting games, but Street Fighter's AI makes me fucking angry).

It's easier to play with a fightstick than it is with a gamepad (Yes, regular specials and combo's are pretty simple to pull off. However whenever you feel like you needed the Ultra combo to save your ass, the gamepad has officially become a gamble. I've never had any issue with any other game using specials then with Street Fighter 2-4. It's not like learning to use a fightstick for the first time is very effective either).

The pro's online who use fightsticks make you want to go buy one (Why this sucks? Getting a good fightstick isn't cheap. you can buy a crapy-ass one on say Amazon and if you're willing to take the dive and mod the little thing with Sanwa and Seimitsu parts you can have yourself an excellent fightstick, if not go buy one issued by capcom for about $130+). Yes I own a fightstick, I play a lot of games using the fightstick and Street Fighter 4 is supposed to be played with one. Basically feeling like if you were the casual gamer who got fucked over because you fighting game enthusiast friends told you to buy the game and play but never told you to buy a fightstick, you're going to be pissed off and wish you never wasted your cash.

Oh wait, that's exactly what happened to me when I was younger! Now I own the game again because it was on sale on Steam and decided to compare why I hated it as a kid and realized it's the fucking gamepad. It's not like the xbox 360 controller has a bad design, in fact the games I've played mentioned in this poll actually work well with a gamepad... but SF2&4. It's not like I'm not using just one controller, I've tried 4 different controllers just to make sure.

Basically the reason why I hate it is the fact that the expectation of becoming an excellent player in Street Fighter is owning a gamepad and devoting countless hours into the game. I'm sorry I can't do it. I can never do it. I wish I could get a refund for the first $60 I spent on the damn game and the 7.50 i spent on buying it on Steam. The game fills me with rage. The only good thing about it is that the community of players aren't really that bad. No matter what though, if you play a fighting game long enough, you can tell the difference between someone using a fightstick and someone using a gamepad.

I apologize for my inner dislike for Street Fighter, I can't recomend the game to people because of how unfriendly it is towards users of a gamepad. It's not like super terrible like keyboard controls for Darksouls, but It's enough to realize that the player against you seems to have more flexibility in what moves they can do giving them a higher advantage. I felt terrible beating people who were using a gamepad. I went around asking different people "are you using a fightstick or gamepad, a majority of whom I asked were using gamepads, but the people who would be on the same level or just plain kick my ass were using fightsticks. Not bad controls, but I swear there's a fucking advantage point, I can feel it playing on the both controllers.

Now that I'm done with my spite towards Street Fighter, I would like to say I like every other game on the poll. It's a tie between Skull Girls, Darkstalkers 3 and MVC2. Airblock is a god send, large fun combo's and being whacky and weird. Love it and pretty welcoming to newer players (well to me anyway) and gamepad friendly!

-For those who enjoy Street Fighter, keep playing, I'm not saying to stop and hate it like myself. This is simply me taking the time to realize something about the franchise and it's my own personal opinion. I've never hated anyone on the multiplayer because the community of players have always been pretty nice. I'm just saying what floats in my brain.

Why does no one count netherrealm's stuff? MK9 and injustice are great, and the reason I still play fighting games.

I've gotta go with Tekken Tag 2 out of that list. I've been a Tekken fan since the beginning and, while I don't feel that Tag 2 is the best Tekken game, it's still damn fun. It's also less popular than most fighters so can probably use the props.

Least favourite? Easily MK9. I just can't stand the Mortal Kombat series. MK9 is a little better than some of the earlier entries to the series, but it's still a pretty poor example of the genre given how many good fighters are out there these days.

Also, to the OP, I'm not sure I understand where you're coming from. Most of your vitriol seems to be stemming from having difficulty winning as well as a mistaken belief that you need a fight stick to compete in SF4. Any fighting game is pretty tough to find wins in if you're not that good at it and/or are not practiced at it. Also, there is absolutely no need at all to play with a fight stick to be able to win. Several of the top SF4 players in the world are solely pad players. Sticks may have more convenient button lay outs (and the 360 pad is considered by pretty much any fighting game player to be terrible for any fighting game), but it's really about what you put the time in using. If you're losing to better players, it's not because of their controller or yours, it's because they are better than you are.

That's the thing though, I played on gamepad and constantly lost. I play on fightstick I win much more often against the people who just beat me on gamepad. Perhaps it's just me, I just feel like there's an advantage to it. I put about a days worth into both and I've owned a fightstick for a vastly shorter period of time than my gamepad. Perhaps it's just me, but when it comes to Sf2&4 i feel like fightstick has a stronger advantage.

If you don't mind me asking who's your duo? I use Forest Law and Dr. Bosconovitch, always fun to play that game in a group sometimes.

I've never really played any of the games in the poll, but I'd have to say my favorite fighting game released since 200 would be Super Smash Bros Brawl. It's chaotic, fun and exciting, and all the different stages, characters and items add a lot of variety to the game and make it so you can play in a variety of different ways. I also enjoyed Melee, but I was more fond of all the added stages and characters in Brawl.

I'm also fond of the Naruto fighting games, which are surprisingly good and really fun.

Easily the BlazBlue games.
Who plays fighting games for the story? This guy.
It's hard to choose between CT and CS, I've always thought of them as two halves of the same game. In a good way. But I suppose if I had to pick I'd choose CS.
Honourable mentions to Persona 4 Arena and SoulCalibur II.

Least favourite is probably Mortal Kombat: Deception. Arcade mode felt really half-assed and cheap as hell, Konquest mode was literally the worst story mode I have ever played in a game, everything else was something that sounded awesome on paper but not so awesome to play.

from 2000 on up? you wouldn't have enough room in five polls for all the titles. XD

For 2d fighters, it goes to blazblue. primarily for the story and diverse cast of characters, but also for the care Arksys puts into character balance and making all play styles equally valid. Now if they could just figure out how to get Tager off the bottom tier. XD

for 3d: tekken, dark ressurection. this game was a bloody revolution for handheld fighters. I was in the navy when it got released, and the game may as well have been crack on board my ship. Everyone under the age of 30 had a copy, and we spent hours and hours practicing and fighting each other.

For me, it's Super Smash Bros. Brawl. Then a close tie between Super Smash Bros. Melee and Soul Calibur 2.

I don't play many fighters, but I suppose my least favorite would be Soul Calibur 3. It wasn't nearly as fun as 2 or 4.

DOA series cause it just flows, all the button+directional inputs just seem to click so its very casual friendly. Plus its very visceral, and i like the multistage levels.

Also smash bros with no items but idk if that counts as a fighter.

As a non-fighting game player, Persona 4 Arena. Even for a noob like myself it is a lot of fun. As a Persona fan it is a delicious bit of fan service.

Seriously, multiple MvCs in the poll but not one King of Fighters? :( What a depressing sight.

Well, my favourite is KoF XIII.
Honourable Mention: Vanguard Princess (uncensored JP ver)

My least favourite is Injustice GAM.
Dishonourable Mention: Street Fighter IV

Sorry I mentioned that unfortunately the polls only stretch to eight choices :/ If the polls could increase to 20 I would have included much more.

Persona 4 Arena and BlazBlue. I think the P4A fighting mechanics are actually perfect, they allow people like me who have all the ways in and pressure strats but aren't going full swag combo level (because that stuff is annoying and detracts from the fun) to do well alongside those "lol 80% combos get rekt" people. Glad they're still lurking on UMVC3 and Skullgirls for the most part...

What i'm saying is that combos aren't everything in that game, in fact they're quite subdued in importance compared to other fighting games.

BlazBlue is fun but purple throws are one of the worst game mechanics ever. What was the thought process there?

"Hey you know what would be a good idea? If someone could throw while comboing someone isn't that cool!"

Not like it's a free reset, no not even that. It's a reset before the combo has even ended. Yeah you could counter throw like usual but considering the latency online and the surprise of it you're never going to stop it.

I got into BB in the worst possible way too. The only people online were people who had like 500-1000 games with Ragna or Hakumen or Jin and I hadn't even learned all my moves yet. Y'know how people say you learn something by losing? Yeah no. Not when there's such a vast skill gap. I get locked in a corner and die whether I press buttons or not. Thank god Mu-12 exists or i'd be totally screwed.

I started fighters on UMVC3 simply because Phoenix Wright was on the roster and i'm never letting that go. Yeah, you guys can go on about your "low tiers" i'll be over there laughing at your naivete. I spent over a year playing this slow ass, zero range quirky stance changing guy who has little to no defensive or offensive options and is literally carried by his other two team members until he manages to hit his power spike.

I fell out with UMVC3 though, the online community just got too terrible and the fucking 100% combos left me behind. I have a theory that X-Factor is the entire reason the online community is so toxic. It's a vicious cycle of getting comebacks and being comeback'd leaving just this huge trail of never ending salt being hurled at people who have nothing to do with you getting dark Wesker'd but you're so pissed off you rage message and teabag the poor guy anyway.

Only UMVC3 could pull off the strange phenomenon of salty winners.

Speaking as someone who doesn't play fighting games but loves some Dragon Ball Z, Budokai 3 was a right barrel of laughs. It had a cool customization system and a shockingly robust single player. Fuck dragon rushes, though.

Soul Calibur 3

I know 2 is more finely balanced and has better gameplay, but something about 3's over-the-top ridiculousness and excess just gets to me. I've spent countless good fun hours playing it with friends and will probably continue to play it for years to come. It's not a competitive game or anything like that, but my god is it fun!

Least favourite? I don't play enough to really judge.

Voted Tekken, but my heart is still with the KoF and Capcom vs SNK games instead. Of course leaving off soul calibur and DoA is a tough blow too since i love many games in those series too

Favorite is KoFXIII.

Least favorite? I kind of enjoy almost every game I play to some extent, but I'd say my least favorite is Mortal Kombat.

...I think I'm really biased...
