We've all been there. You're cruising at an elegant pace through your favorite game, having a good time. But in the back of your mind you start getting nervous, you start to dread what's to come. That one theme that throws you off your game. (Yes this may partly be inspired by DJ Yahtzee)

Personally, I can't stand lava areas. They stress me out, I hate the lower lighting, and usually they're hard as balls. Not to mention they're likely the last real world you go to before you hit the final boss.

So what kind of theme does the Escapist hate most?

toss up between ice and water depending on how they are done
if it's a twitchy platformer than ice stages can be frustrating failfests but water worlds are generally slow and boring

toxic/sewer areas, I fucking hate them!
they're terrible, I have yet to play one game where these areas are anything but dumb and out of place
and while I don't outright hate them, I'm not particularly fond of futuristic alien final levels that platformer games seem to always have

deserts, fuck deserts man, they suck.

ok seriously i do not like deserts, i don't really like warm weather and a desert is only that and nothing else, just sand and heat, and a cactus here and there.

so are magma worlds too but they at least look cool as well, and have fire everywhere, deserts dont look good, they look sand.

my favorite worlds are ice worlds though, snowy forests to be specific,a perfect white winter wonderland, with snowy white trees everywhere.

Forests/grasslands in fantasy games bore me - they're uninteresting to look at and entirely generic, with the exception of Lord of the Rings Online, which has the most beautiful landscapes I've ever seen in a game.

Deserts/wastelands in MMOs - or more precisely in WoW. The Barrens is famously dull of course, but it only gets worse and a huge part of the game from 30-60 seems to involve trudging around desolate wastelands with nothing to see but sand and rock, culminating in the utter horribleness of Silithus - a zone so dismal and depressing that I can barely bring myself to level there. 10/10 for an effective atmosphere, but it's just too horrible to be any fun at all.

...and finally underwater levels where the protagonist is too stupid to pick up some proper diving gear and an air tank - yes, I'm looking at you, Lara.

Ice worlds tend to be slippery and involve one or two "slide X objects on an icy floor to complete a puzzle" puzzles.

That, and they make my nipples quite hard from the cold. I choose them.

water worlds or sewer levels

seriously, i'll turn off a game and never touch it again if the game has one and i'm not thoroughly orgasming about the game before i reach that level, i fucking hate water levels.

I don't know if there are any themes I don't really care for. I suppose if I had to pick, desert themes are usually really boring in games that have multiple different world themes. I specify that because Journey does a desert theme extremely well (though it does have a snowy theme near the end too).

I dread a change of mechanics more than I dread a change of theme.

I'm not too fond of deserts with the exception of Journey. Journey managed to make exploring the desert exciting because of the platforming, sliding on sand, and the flying creatures. But other than that, it's usually sink holes, high winds, and some of the more frustrating monsters.

Water ones are actually my favorite. But I just love the water, having grown up around the ocean, lakes, and rivers.

Volcanic settings usually make my eyes want to vomit. Red, black, and brown: Worst color theme ever.

early game plains areas tend to be boring and have boring music. As they are for introducing the player to the game, they are never challenging in the slightest.

oh god, wind across the plains.

In Castle Crashers, the Lava World is my least favourite because it's so long. The first couple of tries were all fails because I kept dying near the end, it doesn't help the enemies keep spamming fireballs either. It would have been redeemed by a cool theme song, looking at you Snow World, but alas, I did not enjoy it as much as the others.

Water worlds, and the deeper the worse they are. Add in anything with a big enough mouth to swallow me whole and I will be sitting on the beach crying to myself for a while. Heck this all goes back to Mario 64 and that Eel. Longest time I could not get many stars on that one level cause that eel freaked me the hell out. I think I managed to beat the game before I even got any of the stars that involved him.

I despise sewers. They're ugly and everything looks the same inside them. I've no idea why so many games (good ones especially) have to include them.

Wood/ forest world.
It is just too ordinary now especially when I can see a tree any day I want in real life. What I mean is at least with the other worlds like desert or volcano etc still at least hold an fantasy aspect for me (something I won't see in real life).
While the same could be said for water but the underwater part of that world still hold my attention especially whne I wouldn't go sea diving in real life.
