Monogamy-the practice of having only one spouse/mate (etc.)

I've heard people before (mostly promiscuous people) give the excuse that monogamy goes against our base instincts as human beings/animals. They give the example that most animals just whore around with every other one so why shouldn't humans? (Although I believe some animals do practice monogamy not sure which ones though) They think our sole goal in life is to spread our seed around as much as possible. Truth? Or a convenient excuse for their promiscuity (generally whoreing around in case you don't know)?

Not to mention those crazy Mormons LOL.

I feel that monogamy is right simply because it just feels right. Having more than one spouse/mate (etc.) seems like it would just make you feel dirty. But I've never experienced a polygamous relationship so I can't say for sure.

How do you feel about monogamy?

EDIT: Secondary question: If polygamy was all of a sudden generally accepted in society (and legal) would you practice it?

I wish to spend my life pleasing one person as best as I can. Have no desire, nor time, to be with more than one individual.

First off swans and goats are monogamous as far as I remember I know swans definitely are. If people don't want to practise monogamy that is up to them but it is a bit of a piss poor excuse saying it goes against human instincts given that loads have done it successfully for years.

Feels right, though it is (very) hard to do.

I don't want to share my g/f with anyone, I'm sure se feels the same way.

It's an ideal that not everyone is comfortable with, and if a man wants to have many wives and the wives are okay with this, or vice versa, that should be fine.
Of course, if it's hidden and non-consensual...that's different.

I think it's pretty unnatural and unreasonable to assume or expect that love as it is expressed through marriage can be restricted to a single individual for an entire lifetime. EVERYBODY LOVE EVERYBODY WOO

It feels right, and the thought of being with more then one person (Polygamy to Group Sex) feels weird and is something I don't wanna do.

Though maybe it only feels right because of Society? I dunno.

Its more successive monogamy theses days? Many partners, but only one at a time.

Actually if you want to get technical about it, the one and only goal for all living things is to survive and reproduce. Monogamy is just considered to be the right thing. I for one don't want to be married, I get sick of people far too easily. However I don't think Polygamy is justified. Even so, it only "feels wrong" because you grew up being told it was wrong; just like everything else.

I'm fine with consensual polygamy (although personally I think it could create inequalities between the gender), but monogamy is just... right. I can't say I'd feel comfortable with someone knowing that I was with someone else aswell (hell, even an accidental drunken cheating is an awful feeling, let alone an entire relationship). I would expect the same from my partner.

What a surprise most of the answers were the politically correct one.

Other:

People are pieces of shit that will eventually fuck each other over, believe it.

I know a few people who have chosen polygamy and... I personally don't understand it.

I'm in no place to judge someone simply because I have no understanding for that way of life. Personally, monogamy is the only way to go for me. I like one on one romantic situations.

Having multiple partners would just fuck things up.

Well, I don't really care about it, as long as all involved parties are in agreement. Polygamy is kind of a natural instinct for humans, though.

On the other hand, today's society is a monogamous one; it is a social norm, at least in some, if not MOST, places. Those with more than one husband or wife are looked down upon, and no one wants that...

I've always been one to leave well enough alone. If people like open relationships and they work, who am I to judge?

The funny with non-gender-specific monogamy is that if a man can have multiple wives then all of them can have multiple men. So, theoretically, everyone could be in indirect marital relationship with almost everyone else, not in a direct one with their ancestors or children of course. Call it anarchy or a communist free-for-all.
A one sided monogamy, allowed for one gender and not the other, would never happen in the oh-so-not-sexist west.
You could practice it even now, just not legally.

I'm not against it but I find that there are better, at least more interesting, alternatives like expiring marital contracts.

If other people do it, I'm fine with that as long as it's consensual.

For me personally though, I'd have to say I'd choose monogamy since I wouldn't like the idea of my boyfriend/husband being involved in the same way with another woman. It would just feel like a betrayal almost. That and the inferiority complex that would likely result would just f*** things up.
