Heyoooooo, time to start controversy again, only this time not about Religion! WOOT WOOT!

No seriously, I'm actually going to be straight with you guys for once. (I can be gay later. Sorry Pala...)
After a previous experience I had with some DLC issues, (*COUGH* fucking Capcom *COUGH*)
it occurred to me that without me purchasing a Downloadable Content Extension of their game, Asura's Wrath, I might not have completed the game to it's fullest extent.

And that little scenario there really rustled my jimmies.

"Now why are Madara's panties up in a bunch?" you may ask yourself and a better question is WHY am I wearing panties!?!?

What annoyed me about this was that this was the first EVER time I ever needed Downloadable Content to finish a single player campaign on a game.
Now to some that may seem like a bit of a trivial matter, but to me I was pissed because first off, I payed 60 dollars expecting to get a FINISHED GAME!!!

What I got instead was a cliff hanger ridden game that was supposed to have a sequel, but later on in the development stages of the game, it turns out that they just ran out of disc space for the FINAL CONTENT.
Now had this little bit of DLC been free, I'd see no problem with it.
But the fact that I had to pay extra to finish a game really bugged me.
Not fill me with hate sort of bug me, but seemed a bit unnecessary.
I mean first off I'm already paying $60+ Dollars for a game. If I want extra content then I'm willing to pay, but I felt as though I shouldn't have to pay a 8 dollars more just to finish an incomplete game that was the result of poor planning.

CAPCOM's already banking so much money on regurgitated fighting games, that it's basically become the EA of Fighting Games to counter the endless stream of bland FPS and Same Old Annual Sports games that just flow out in such a viscous, bile-ridden fluid of mediocrity that I'd swear, it would make the water in Louisiana look crystal clear by comparison.

Plus I don't want anyone giving me that whole speech about "You can just finish the game as is"
No I can't. Because the ending leaves me with a message TELLING ME TO GET THE DLC FOR THE GODDAMN GAME!!!

I honestly see no point in me having to pay extra money to finish an incomplete game.
My personal view is this.

DLC is great, but should not be obligatory to complete a single player game.

Yeah, Asura's Wrath was an ass. At least the DLC didn't cost much. Unlike making you pay double the price of an XBLA game for extra costumes.

I don't think it should ever be mandatory.

But, of course DLC is good if it isn't and allows more of the game. I think Borderlands did quite well to add optional bonuses. But people may have felt pressured since they weren't satisfied with the ending.

I feel as if you have asked to me end your thread before it starts, Joey. Because I think most people will feel the same way about DLC. It's ok aslong as it's not mandatory, or overpriced.

but I don't want it to end...
And I personally did enjoy Asura's Wrath, but a bit of that was taken away when I had to pay extra, and also....well

CAPCOM's about to lay the hammer on my ass for making a counter claim against them because I own all the content and yet those greedy bastards have literally gone out of their way to suspend my funds via youtube...

First they take MEGAMAN!
Then they take DANTE
and now those assholes are literally trying to put their hands in my goodies!!!

What, they're copyright claiming your videos?
That seems weird. Most LPers don't seem to ever get affected by that. It usually only seems to happen when people use copyrighted music.

I'm going to assume you are talking exclusively about paid DLC as that seems to be the examples you mentioned.

No, of course not. If the ending is sold separately to the game then the game is incomplete and thus must be considered unfit for purpose. Unless they're willing to argue the purpose of the "game" is to sell DLC, in which case go right ahead.

If a game has a story as a part of it then the story must be resolved by the end of whatever is data you've bought the rights to use.

Yup. Just when you think they can't get any lower, they go deeper than a well endowed Cthulhu would burrowing into a Japanese school girl....I'm truly sorry for that image.

So with that said, I'm taking my business to Platinum Games

So why are you wearing panties?

Seriously though, DLC in theory is a great way to expand the base game by continuing to provide it with content once the game is released, for a reasonable price.
In practice DLC tends to be a way for unscrupulous game companies to milk you more, for content that is already on the disk. Or an easy way to make a quickpack by selling a weapon+a few maps for a price.

So yeh not too fan of DLC most of the time.

What did people not see this coming with the start of DLC. I never have/ never will buy dlc for anything ever. I don't support dlc , i don't want dlc . Free or not i'm not downloading anything that isn't a patch for my games . If your game isn't finished don't release it! Now other can throw their money at publishers if they want , but i won't have any of it .

I am also against Digital download , so even if it's a proper expansion pack , allow me to buy it on disc or i will not buy it .

I was highly sceptical towards DLCs, right until I play the Fallout: New Vegas ones. High quality, good story-lines, 8-10 hours playtime and relatively cheap. After that, I was completely sold about the idea of DLCs.

DLCs in other games though tend to be overpriced shit. As for the Asura's Wrath story - it's absolutely unaccepteable. There's no way I would have bought a tacked on ending.

Because it turns out that you really are, in fact, dead, and this guy in the mask has been walking around pretending to be you when I think it's just your little brother suffering from "Big Brother's Shadow" Complex.
Sorry, wrong question.

DLC should always be optional and never required. I like DLC that expands on the story (Shadow Broker, Harley's Revenge, Dragon Age Awakening), but the situation you describe terrifies me. Buying a full game and then having the pay extra for the ending...if that becomes standard, I think I may stop playing games.
And DLC that only releases new multiplayer stuff, or worse, weapon skins, can go jump off a cliff in my book.

DLC can present some awesome content and give us more of what we liked with the original game. Take Alan wake and the extra chapters there. I really enjoyed that. I also enjoyed the Batman Arkham City's extra mission featuring Harley Quinn. If I can drop a little extra cash on some DLC to extend my enjoyment of a game then I'm all for it.

However DLC should always be optional, you should always get the full game without the need to buy something extra. I don't mind paying for some back story mission or an epilogue mission, but if I have to pay to beat the final boss or something like that then I will be pissed off and probably refrain from buying the game unless it's a game I really really want.

Honestly with the amount of abuse going along with it I would start banning it all together, and then publicly execute the sinners as a warning.

I was thinking of "nuke from orbit" but you don't want to look unreasonable.

I like DLC in theory but it's being abused way too much. When DLC is being announced six months before launch there's something wrong there.

DLC should always be optional, especially for single-player games. Free DLC is always great but we only ever see this if it fixes a bug in a game (except for that time Nintendo gave us a Red and White Yoshi for Mario Tennis Open). If DLC is announced before a game is even released then it will send my eyebrows skyward as a best-case reaction and make me want to avoid the game completely otherwise.

Hey, remember that time Rocksteady talked up the ability to play as Catwoman in the marketing for Arkham City then said you have to put in an online pass to play as her about a week before launch? That's why I still haven't ever played Arkham City! Granted, that's more disc-locked content than downloadable but I just figured I'd ***** about my 360 being unable to maintain a connection to the internet. Honestly I'd rather have DLC than disc-locked content since I was nice enough to bring that up.

I kind of like the Theatrhythm DLC...or rather I did before I found out I can't listen to those bought tracks in the music player. It's great to play Somnus but I really wish I could listen to it without the gameplay bit while doing things like posting messages to this forum or otherwise wasting my time.

Concerning the Asura's Wrath extended ending i thought it to be very worth it. And it could have been worse, after all, what if you paid that money only to find that the extended ending was already on the disc? It would have made the controversy over Street Fighter x Tekken look like a house kitty next to a tiger.

Anyway my views on DLC are as follows;
-When its initialy planned, i dont care.
-When its announced, i dont care.
-When its released, i dont care.
-What the DLC has in it, i do care.
-How much the DLC costs, i do care.
-What value i place on the DLC based on the two above, i do care alot.

Since ive talked a bit about On-Disc Locked Content, ill say that i dont really care either way, since it means i wont have to place myself into a stupor waiting for my PS3 to download something with its ancient wifi system. And since most of my PC games are from Steam, its hard to call it On-Disc Locked Content as it came with no disc for it to be locked within.
