Normally I wouldnt notice these, but I watching a vid for The LeBrons (yes, Lebron James has a cartoon modelled after him, no, I'm not joking, <url=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q5ZNXp77RhE>here's the first episode) and noticed in the posted link that they made a reference to Reservoir Dogs. So I went to post in ability (just cause, I'm a nerd like that), and noticed the comments section was disabled.

And that got me thinking about why you would do that. I get taht you dont want someone to flame your vid (and I guess people take that as license to do something profounded retarded or stupid [usually]), but it just opens up your user page for it (though the lebrons doesnt have a public user page comment section.

So just thought I'd ask the escapist community what they thought, just on vids in general with comments disabled.

I think it's more to 'scared of trolls because they KNOW their video sucks' more than anything else.

Less scared of trolls more can't be fucked dealing with them. You do feel somewhat responsible for comments on videos you've posted.

Does remove half the fun of youtube though, half is the video content and the other is watching pond life go at it.

youtube comments are so shit that it's a Godsend when they're disabled so you won't be attempted to snort the stench of the foulest bullshit put on the net.

Some have comments removed in order to avoid spoilers, like for Marblehornets.

Probably because 99% of youtube video comments just turn into a giant flamewar that has nothing to do with the video?

Comments should be disabled permanently. It isn't the trolling. It's that the average youtube commenter can't seem to make a legible comment without resorting to puerile and homophobic profanity.

Other. I don't trust youtube vids with comments disabled, mostly because if the video is a prank, there will be lots of swearing towards the video poster and I know ahead of time.

Its alot easier to disable comments than spend the next few months sifting through comments removing bad comments.

Frankly, I wish you could just disable comments in general.

Nothing sucks out your faith in humanity like some idiots on Youtube >_>

I think it's more to stop the arguments and flames wars.

Also, whats wrong with you guys? Youtube commenters are some of the funniest people on the planet.

Some people just don't want their videos ruined by the unwashed horde of howler monkeys. I don't care what anyone has to say about a video when I post it. Also, people who put comments like, "X number of people Y" when X equals the number of dislikes or "Thumbs up if Z" are the biggest, most massive, wretched, self-absorbed cunts in the known universe. That these morons are often the top rated comments instead of being disliked into oblivion is beyond all reason.

Yeah, that was the reason a couple of my favourite YouTube videos disabled their comments. Someone makes a snide comment, a couple of people react, more people react, and suddenly it becomes an all out war. I noticed this happens a lot on videos about Canada; some dumbass, more often then not a Canadian, will proclaim that USA sucks and should die and stuff along those lines, and it usually incites a major flame war.

I don't particularly like videos that disable comments, because I like being able to talk about them and assess the opinions of others.

That said, keeping in mind the standard of the community on Youtube, I can see why some might choose to disable comments.
