So i'm playing batman arkham asylum and I am becoming overwhelmed by people and then I remember I have the counter button (y) and after about 5 minutes everyones dead and I haven't lost a single bit of health, The game brags about freeflow combat system which is exciting and all but when you can sit there countering till the cows come home was it really worth the effort? Anyway enough of my rant about batman thats yahtzee's job. My point of that was it reminded me a lot of assassains creed's way of working it's plays beautifully but the combat is a bit shaky, so Tell me what games have you come across that have a darn right aweful combat system or just ones that didn't live up to the hype

God play street fighter 4. The combat system handles like a wheelbarrow full of bricks....and the bricks are dinosaurs....and the wheel is a brick...

I have a problem with auto-lock systems (GTA IV). Hold R2/Right bumper and press the fire button, it's so sensless and not really fun. It's also overused online, some kid kept killing me and calling me a noob until I turned off auto-lock, after which he lost 20-0 kills.

Prince of Persia: Sands of Time.

Slowing down time really didn't help combat at all, and at times, I would be battling the same guy for about ten minutes. He wasn't even a boss or anything, he was just another minion, but we stood there hitting/countering each other in a stalemate for ten straight minutes. It's pitiful.

Dreamfall. You have a healthbar but can only fight once or twice throughout the whole game. The rest of the time it's just there to let you know that you died.

Assassin's Creed

Hold dodge, hit the counter button when someone attacks, when there is only one enemy left, hack away until he dies.

That is an exact summery of EVERY fight you will encounter in the ENTIRE GAME.

You can do this on Batman Arkham Asylum, although countering isn't as powerful

As much as I like Fallout 3, there were certain things about the combat that bugged me. The first is the VAT system is sometimes a little buggy, I'd be about 3 feet away from someone and yet my percentages to hit were all 0%.

The second is with free-shooting, you can somehow miss somebody from about 6 feet away which happens more when you are a lower rank (so have low weapon skills) but even someone whose never fired a gun before could hit somebody from that distance every time.

The last issue is with both types, sometimes even if you shoot somebody point blank with a shotgun to the face they can take minimal damage.

X-Blades, you can spend about half an hour not getting hit, and continuously striking the opponents, but you'll take so long to kill every single enemy and there are so many of them that it just feels like a slog through quicksand and baby guts.

There's an achievement for getting a 200 hit counter, which you will get in your first fight, and it's supposed to be difficult considering they refer to that number as "Impossible".

EDIT: Also Too Human's gunplay. The swordplay isn't so bad if you can keep it going as Baldur speeds up as you kill more enemies so he can be dashing around in quite a satisfactory fashion, but the shooting sucks.

I didn't think Batman's combat system was "wait and counter" like Assassin's Creed. You could do that but your combos would suck. I personally liked the system, because if you do well you won't get hit and feel like a total badass, but if you miss-time your strikes, you get hit and you look like an idiot.

Just my 2 cents.

Also, Assassin's Creed's system wasn't that bad considering the animations were actually nice to watch, although it was possible to counter until the cows come home.

I found the combat system in Kingdom Hearts: Chain of memories to be unwieldy. GUN's combat was at times really awesome and realistic and at others just made you want to throw the disk into a pit of lava and piss on it for its retarded shifts in difficulty and realism.

I preferred the fact you could sneak around and scare the shit out of everyone, but i'm playing it through on hard and the bits where you are forced to fight people is just stupid you can pretty much only survive by continuously countering

Dark Messiah.. just kick the bastards..

Kicking your opponents rendered them defenceless and/or lying down for like 5 seconds.. Once you'd found the kick button it was painfully easy.
