Great news, but will this new Portal bring anything new to the table, or will it it be another great puzzle-shooter, like its predecessor?

This is a triumph.
I'm making a note here: FI-NAL-E
It's hard to overstate my satisfaction.
Valve Corporation.
They do what we want, because, they can.
For the good of all of us.
Except maybe PS3's.

I'm looking forward to it, but Valve may be painting them into a corner with this one. Part of the runaway train that is Portal's popularity is because it was the sleeper hit of the Orange Box, and really, the entire year of gaming. People played it and were hugely surprised by how much went into it, how much they got out of it, all the way to the very end with the greatest original song for a video game, ever.

And now Valve have to top that; they have to find a way to one-up the game that so many gamers have said was the best game of the year for all its two to three hours of game length. In fact, it tells you something when gamers can enjoy a two to three hour game, when so many of them complain that 24 hours is too short a length. The love for this game is insurmountable, and you can see that in any site that has Portal-related merchandising.

I mean, I'm sure I'll really like Portal 2, but look at your average gamer, especially on these boards. This time around, people will be LOOKING for reasons to criticize it.

Well I don't think it'll be that hard. Everyone remembers the entirety of Portal was teaching you new things, and then you never got a chance to solve anything extraordinarily complicated. Portal 2 could easily just try to reacquaint people with the original things, then take it all to the next level. Play some custom maps and you'll see what I mean.

I hope so. Goign through the same environments or tests again to kill the same GlaDos might be a bit of a let down. Ah well, it Vave and it's Portal. Not complants. Hope they bring cake.

Didn't this discussion already come up? Sigh. Well, I'll say what I said then, Lightening doesn't strike twice. I'm sure the Portal Krew will strive to come up with a game to top the first, because, as End_Boss said, "people will be LOOKING for reasons to criticize it."
But all in all I do hope it will be a good game. Although I doubt I will have left my room before then, thanks to Smash Bros related Paralysis.

I think in Portal 2 you're still going to be "battling" GladOS. Just somewhere else. On the Borealis maybe? I'm hoping that they're going to bring back the Companion Cube. It wouldn't be the same without it. Unless they do some other lovable inanimate object. Anyway I'm looking forward to it, even if it'll take a couple of years...sigh

It's going to be hard to capture the spirit of the original without going into obnoxious self-parody i.e 'OMG CAKE!'. I think they'll be able to recapture the gameplay of the original well if the same team works on it, but it's status as a cult-hit will have been severely eroded.

More than most of the time, this is what happens to the sequels of a break-out hit in any genre. Marketing and expectation to improve on the original are hard tags to shake. I just hope they can capture the ingenious gameplay of the original, and don't descend into overblown sequel territory.

Hello, friend. I see you. Are you there? Hey, put me down! Owowowowowo! Whhhyyyy?
I never knew how hard it was to kill something that said "It's OK, I don't blame you."
I'd like to see the protagonist on the run from Aperture Science, fighting human enemies in an urban environment.

Portal high on wall+portal under car/baddie=awesome.

Sure, it won't be as well-recieved as the original. The original was almost without hype, and hardly failed to please in all aspects of gameplay.

Yeah, the sequel - whatever form it takes - will be hit at by those wanting to find faults. It will not reach the heights of the original (it never can, hype, of any kind, will always ruin the experience of a new game).

But, you'll still buy it, it'll still be a good game, and it won;t have been a wats eof money.

I'd prefer it, though, if they worked hard on getting an easy-to-use level editor available. Portal is one of those games that is crying out for user-generated content. There might be some out there, but only those with real level-ed experience can make them...

I'm guessing it will introduce usage of the portal gun in chaotic, non-controlled enviroments, like outdoors, or against AI enemies.
I seriously doubt it. It would be almost impossible to design a game like that; there would be so many ways to exploit and break it (and encounter hideous bugs). Portal gameplay makes the most sense in a strictly controlled environment, probably why Valve chose the "test chamber" theme.

The main reason for Portal 2 is more fun puzzles. I wouldn't expect or demand another story-driven experience as brilliant as the original (and Valve would just be setting a trap for themselves if they try!), but the puzzle gameplay was entertaining enough by itself that probably lots of people would buy a new Portal game just for more interesting levels. If they can think of a creative way to add in another great story, so much the better.

I suspect Valve planned this from the beginning though - make a fun puzzle game that can be released in episodic increments, and make sure that the first one is so good and notable that practically everyone will play it. After being hooked on Portal by the first game, lots of people will buy the sequels, even if all they add is harder puzzles and more achievements.

I just have one request for Valve: Less turrets plz. :|

I am, sadly, reminded of The Matrix and it's sequels. The Matrix was almost a sleeper hit that came from no where and took the theaters by storm. Then when they announced a sequel, no matter how good it was or could have been, it now had to compete with The Matrix. I fear, a bit, that this is what one will find with Portal 2.

Not because Portal 2 will be bad, lack luster, or even sub par compared to Portal. It may, in fact, be twice as good, but people will expect the same feelings that Portal pulled from them.

Instead, I predict people will get the 'standard Valve procedure': "More of the Same, But Different". It will be Portal, it will give more physics flinging, ball busting, Sentry centered game play, but they will somehow up the anti.

We've learned from past franchise games that sequels are like that (Mario, for example). It's not bad, but people are going to ruin it for themselves. Me? I'm going to buy it regardless, because like the player made maps you can download, it's that kind of stupid fun I love.

Here's a thought.

What if the "Us" and "Them" GLaDOS talked about was the remaining humans/resistance against the Combine?

Black Mesa is dead. No humans in the lab. It would make sense for Chell and the Freeman to cross paths. Meet Half-Life 2: Episode Portal 2

Whats wrong with their standard procedure? Valve makes one very deep game, then bilks it for all it's worth, polishing it, using it in odd ways, making sure that they've treaded all of the major design ground. and why not? it allows for quality content at reasonable intervals. It took them years to make HL2, they're not going to go through that crap again when they still have a very deep game engine to work with.

But yeah, that strategy does get old eventually, but they seem to be canny enough to realize when a horse starts to tire.
