As anyone who's been following Portal 2 will know though out the game will be joined by not only the constant hilarious yet threatening presence of GLaDOS, but a personality core know as Wheatley. Most of you will have seen his original video and fallen in love with his dialogue; whether you well in love with his voice actor is a different matter.

In these original clips Wheatley is not voiced by a professional but by one of ValvEs animators, the British born Richard Lord. It was made clear that Richard was only used as a stand in until a professional took over.

Time has passed and since then we have received new clips of Wheatley and news of his replacement.

In this clip the voice work of Wheatley has been taking over by Stephen Merchant, all round funny bloke, comedian and actor often found working along side Ricky Gervais in shows such as the Office and Extras.

Since this change I've seen much strife upon the interwebs. Many people are refusing to except the new sounding Wheatley and have fought back in the useless ways nerds do (petitions). I just wondered if this is just isolated to the Portal 2 forums and a couple of other places.

Personally I haven't heard enough to give a definitive answer. I was impressed by Richard Lord when I heard he wasn't a voice actor by profession, but you can definitely hear it in his tone. Nice voice, bad acting. He speaks like a childrens tv presentor or primary school teacher, like he's talking to an idiot. I personally think Stephen Merchant did a better job up until the section with GLaDOS which is pretty poorly done, though this may be because the animations don't match his tone.

Either way I think it was a poor decision by ValvE to show any clips of Wheatley before the final cut was made.

EDIT: Poll has failed for some odd reason. Just state in your posts.

Fuck those guys, I love Stephen Merchant's voice. I just love the West Country accent, even in its mildest forms (see Russell Howard)

Newest bloke.

The first one...annoyed me when I heard it...although only very very slightly. Might be because they guy isn't a voice actor and I picked up on something off with the performance. Meh...second one sounds more believable anyhow.

I liked Stephen Merchant from The Ricky Gervais Show. The original bloke was pretty good, if there's a large enough fanbase for both voice-actors then Valve may implement an option where you can choose who voices Wheatley, that would be pretty nice.

A lot of people may root for the original fella because he's "indie" and "independent" and we all know that hiring established professionals is the work of a soulless monetary-addiction malevolent developer.

Is it just me, or was GLADOS's voice strikingly different?
It's not just you. Wheatley sounds distinctly more human. GLaDOS, though more sarcastic and human like due to the events of Portal, is still robotic. I'm guessing Wheatley sounds more human so you can relate to him more easily as your friendly metal pal rather than as an ominous voice in the background. Or it could relate to the story (Wheatley once human?) Or it could even be that they haven't adjusted his voice yet.

EDIT...Or do you mean different from how she sounded in Portal, there by making me look like an idiot?

It's the same voice actor. She just sounds quietly pissed rather than like a train station announcement or crazy super ***** like in the first game. She'll probably have her own new journey to go though.

Yeah, I'm afraid I've made you look a bit like an idiot... Sorry bout that. To me it seems like her voice is somewhat less robotic than in the first game, and somehow... different in another way as well.

I'm going to go with Stephen Merchant, the voice just sounds better. But I got to give Richard Lord credit, his voice held a nice British Tone without sounding too British. Something just sounds wrong when the Robot says "Bloody."

Aww, I liked the first one! He was so cute and clueless. The new one sounds a bit more gruff.

Stephen Merchant is better.
The other guy, he had a nice voice, he just won?t a voice actor and it showed.

I actually like the new voice better. I didn't have a problem with the old one until I heard it compared to the new one. He's obviously not a good voice actor and the new guy does a better job. Honestly, I really doubt that by the time Portal 2 comes out that it will make a difference.

I don't know why but I like the new voice better. The older one seemed more upbeat and cheerful (not like that's a bad thing) which is why it probably seemed to get on my nerves a little.

Well, I would like the professional a bit more if his voice was a pitch or two up, give that child like innoscence, but If there are any emotional moments, I'd want a professional, what would be cool is if a DLC pack (cheap or free) offered an option for either, sort of like an alternate mode, like commentary mode, but with the two distinct voices.

I think I like the new voice a bit better. I noticed the old one kinda stumbled/mispronounced some lines. The new voice seems quite different from what I would expect from a robotic ball though.
