Hi, 'scapies!

I'm currently working on a translation project, translating some poetry from English to French. Since I like to know what I'm translating about, I do my research about this and that, if I'm not sure what the author is talking about.

So when I saw this Joe Hill guy mentionned, I did my homework and went online to get to know the guy better. I'm not talking about Stephen King's son. Joe Hill, the one my poet is referring to, was a labor activist in the early 1900's. Among other way to spread awareness, he wrote parodies of songs, which he'd then have played on airwaves and in public gatherings. He was executed by a firing squad in November of 1915.

One of the songs he wrote is called "The Preacher and the Slave". The first verse and the chorus go like this :

Long-haired preachers come out every night,
Try to tell you what's wrong and what's right;
But when asked how 'bout something to eat
They will answer in voices so sweet

Chorus
You will eat, by and by,
In that glorious land above the sky;
Work and pray, live on hay,
You'll get pie in the sky when you die

Now I don't know about you, but the last two lines seem to me like they might've inspired the famous cake from Portal... Given the relationship between GLADoS and the girl, I'm pretty sure this cake thing is an adaptation of Joe Hill's pie.

Your thoughts?
