I don't know, I'm willing to bet a lot more people than you'd think understood that reference. My little cousin is in high school and when Portal first came out, she said all the guys in her school played it. Video games have become more popular and are more accepted than when I was in school.

On a cleverness scale from one to ten, 1 being not-so-clever, and ten being extremely clever, that was about a 2; still clever, but not worth writing home about.

I'd say that's a pretty weak valedictorian speech.

OK at my end of year speech, the co-heads of the grade made jokes, but they were jokes that we would get because they were in jokes for our grade, like barney being a bear, the haunted doll, and scary cheese XD But they were at least serious for abit.
