So a friend of mine brought a pair of Powerisers and loves them.

I think you should save yourself the money and when/if you want to use them, ask permission.
If the guy who has them won't let you, let it slide. They look expensive, ostensibly reliable, so they'll last a while, possibly until he loses interest in them and considers selling them.
