When in a game, what weapons do you like best? Long range? Short range?

I personally like to take out threats a long distance away, preferably long before they can return fire. It's a philosophy I've lent to RTS games as well as platformers and FPS games. However, this thrill of eliminating threats is often rivaled by my love of running and gunning with shotguns.

So, out of those two realms, what do you really prefer? I can't honestly tell what I enjoy more!

In real life or games?

I am assuming games.

I like using long range weapons (snipers, some assault rifles) to take out the opposition before they see me. Close combat is a bit too messy for me, I usually blind fire at them then run in for a knife kill.

IRL? Melee weapons. I have some natural ability to wield these, and they are readily available everywhere. I have no training with any form of ranged weapon, and I doubt much skill in using them (Guns I don't know how to use other than pull trigger, I have no clue where a safety thingy is or how to reload them ect. and bows I have no skill with at all) with the exception of things like throwing knifes.

In games? Multipurpose weapons. Usually assault rifles with long range scopes, so I can shoot and kill close range, or aim long range to take down far away targets.

Whatever works (or is needed in the circumstance), as I have skills at every range.
Although, in a lot of games, their melee is rather ... lame ... so I guess I'll also choose to be more stylish at the expense of a bit of power.

It depends on the game. In RPGs and whatnot, I tend to prefer melee/close quarters weapons, getting right in someone's face and exploding them with a couple of attacks.

In shooters though, I tend to stick more towards mid-range weapons. High accuracy, low rate of fire type weapons. Not really sniper rifles (as I can't stand the scope most of the time), but semi-auto assault rifles and high caliber pistols, etc.

In RTS games, I tend to prefer highly mobile, mid-short range units. In StarCraft 2, I tend towards Reaper swarms and Stalkers + Colossi, depending on the race I'm using. Things like that.

Anyway, in terms of shooting games (FPS, Third person) I prefer long range. Either assault rifle or better yet: a sniper rifle. I'm fairly accurate with a mouse, so long range gives me a big advantage.

Short-medium range, 20<...<100

It's easy to hit targets if you use proper fire control and the amount you need to alter your aim by because of range is effectively non-existant.

Aye, but people post in the wrong forums all the time.

In video games, I prefer any range that lets me safely use heavy ordinance when at a distance in multiplayer, and long-range weapons and shotguns anywhere else.

In real life, small melee weapons(Knives, shortswords) and staves are for me. Scythes are also fun. I CAN use a bow, but I need a medium-based poundage, 40 pounds for best accuracy.

i work at any range i have to. Ive trained with sniper rifles, CQB style rifles, handguns, swords, knives, hand to hand and so on. Its best, i find, to be prepared for any situation that might rise.

both in real life and in games I prefer ranges between close and "what cologne is that?" I've tried the sniper thing but I get one or two then the whole army comes charging down the hill and it becomes machine gun blasty time.
in games I mean, I haven't ever done the sniper thing in real life...yet

Medium to long range preferably.
I am proficient at short range due to necessity in Halo, but I still prefer medium to long range.

Depends on the game. In a shooter I prefer mid range, close enough to get good shots off while being far enough to be able to dodge still.
In mech games, depends on my mech setup. I've got some in Armored Core that are brutal in close and some that are only good at long ranges.

Short, those this does rely on a good combat system.

MoH (2010) was fun, but if it weren't half an hour long, shooting at dots would have worn thin. Mid-ranged combat pretty much relies on cover, but in close range you can actually do some circle strafing, or sneak attacks, or jump on someone's head, anything that's actually a satisfying use of skills you pick up while playing. The exception is of course any game whose combat is centred around *clickclickclickclickclickclick*... like Batman Arkham Asylum.

I guess I'm the only dude who really only abhors mid range weapons. I can do wonders with a sniper rifle with their sneaky long range scope. On the flip side nothing's more satisfying than sneaking up on a guy and pummeling them with my fists. As far as assault rifles and the regular in between stuff though... I just feel so meh about them. So yea, anything that'll let me sneak my kills in whether it's from a far or up close and personal.

Since everyone is saying IRL fighting too, a spear is always a satisfying choice for me.

I prefer the range required to fire a explosive weapon for FPSs.
In an RPG I prefer ranged magics, and in an RTS I prefer to call down a firestorm with whatever artillery I can build. :D

I'd like to think I've been around long enough to avoid doing that on too many occasions but I will edit the OP to make things clearer.
