I have preordered Dead Rising 2 for the PS3 from Play.com and, as a reward for preordering the game, I was given a code to get my face zombified and put on my own personal game cover.
To be honest I didn't care and haven't bothered getting the cover, but this got me wondering why they do these preorder rewards.
I understand that they are a way of thanking you for buying from them maybe trying to sweeten the deal for potential buyers but do they actually make any diffrence whether or not you buy the game?
Also, what sort of preorder goodies have you come across, good and bad?

To me, no I don't give a crap about preorder bonuses. I think a main reason is just to get some guaranteed cash in. Not sure if it's retailers or the game developers tho who came up with the idea.

Depends on what it is. I have a bunch of multiplayer skins for several games that I don't give a toss about, but I also have an exclusive Starscream figure that came with War for Cybertron. Which is cool, since I collect Decepticons.

Amazon has pre-order bonuses of $10-$20 credit.

So, yeah. I care.

I'm pre-ordering all my games from Amazon for the rest of my life after hearing about the deal people got on Reach.

I'm not canceling my Gamestop pre-orders that I already have at my local store, though. Because I know the people at the store, and their boss will kill them if they lose all 7 of my pre-orders. I'm just never pre-ordering from there again.

Depends on what it is.If it's for a collector's edition I want then certainly. If there's a nice bonus like Fallout 3's music CD then most definitely.

Yes, as in if they're significant and in-game I purchase the game used, so as not to give the company money.

If I'm being denied content they can be denied money.

That said, if it's just a pile of money or an early unlock I don't mind, because I can still get it.

The tf2 hats are awesome. Also they take 5 dollars off the game when you buy it. I dont see why I shouldnt preorder.

I do care about them. But as an issue to be solved, not a quality to be loved. Game producers tend to restrict content to users who hadn't pre-ordered their copy of the game. This may be a small thing, like a weapon, or costume. But that is still content in-game that I am not allowed to use, just because I didn't pre-order. I wouldn't mind if you could buy the content seperate later. But , sadly, thit is not the case. And bearing in mind that when I pay for a game, I expect to get the most out of what the game has to offer. When i'm suddenly told that I am not allowed the whole game, I begin to loathe the producers, more and more.

Kind of, but I still only preorder games when I can see myself not getting them at launch, and them not being avaliable for another 2 months.

That's a pretty horrible reason not to cancel.

I only preorder a game whose developer I trust, so it doesn't matter if the game offers goodies, if I don't think it'll be worth a release-day buy, I'm out.

Do US shops still make you pay for pre-orders? I can't remember...

Anyway, pre-orders in every shop are free around here, so I tend to put an order down on any and every game I might get at GAME, because if I do decide to pick it up on launch, I get double reward points, and that means more discount for me! And if I don't, no problem. it's not like any game other than those by Infinity Ward or Rockstar sell out over here. Even Halo Reach was in stock in every store.

If the pre-order bonus is anything short of a soundtrack or useful (useful being the operative word), then no, I don't care. Most of these bonuses are some little piece of armor or some small weapon that is really inconsequential, so I'd rather not.
