What movies have you seen that you really enjoyed while at the same time found too artsy/pretentious. Artsy/pretentious to the point where you would understand if other people disliked the movie.

My pick for this is 2046 by Wong Kar Wai.

it is basically a test on how many plotlines you can put in a romance movie.

You know i really think "pretentious" is an overused word. It seems to me that most people use it as a way to say "I didn't understand it because i didn't even try". See, for me the fun in watching a, say, David Lynch movie is not only in actually watching the movie but in figuring out afterwards. It's kinda like solving a puzzle. Oh yeah, talking about Lynch:

Eraserhead. Some people say it's his best movie... i really don't like it all that much. I think i get what it's about but i still didn't enjoy it. Not because it's too artsy or too surreal but because it's just unpleasant. It's creepy, disturbing, disgusting and the message is too personal to really appeal to me. I'm glad i've watched it but i really don't want to see it again.

Most of my family and friends consider Fear and Loathing to be pretentious, but I love it.

In the same vein, one of my friends loves the movie Drive and considers it to be a masterpiece, while I consider to be one of the most stupid fucking films I have ever seen.

Inception, because I didn't get it and it seemed as if all it needed was the whole "dream within a dream within blehhhhh" plot point to carry the film, but it was just a clusterfuck.

But I need to watch it again to refine my opinion.

Stalker is perhaps the most impenetrable movie I've ever watched and enjoyed. It has a great atmosphere and a hypnotic pace, but almost nothing happens, for hours. I can readily see why people wouldn't like it.

Got to love that someone watched this film and thought "Hey, you know this would make a really good first person shooter!" Which it did, of course.
