I call myself a progressive rock fan, music of the 70s seems to resonate well with me. I have the obvious; Pink Floyd, King Crimson etc. Can anyone think of any obscure bands that are essential for such a collection?

Hail, friend. Try these: Yes, Jethro Tull, Caravan, Camel, Gentle Giant, Van Der Graaf Generator, Gong, Soft Machine, and Wigwam (if you can find it anywhere). Well, most of these aren´t exactly obscure, but essential nonetheless.

By the way, what are these "obvious" you already have? Just so that I can recommend something new.

Is Tool counted as progressive Metal?
Yes, I believe it is. And I forgot Mike Oldfield from the list above.

Ah, I almost forgot Alan Parsons too. I´d also add Gryphon to my list of recommendations.

If the prog rock of the 90s strikes a chord, there are some really great bands (mostly metal) you should try, like Änglagård and Anekdoten (both a bit hard to find, I´m afraid), Porcupine Tree, Spock´s Beard and Riverside.

Gryphon I have heard before, on LP. I enjoy some of that heavier 90s stuff.

What the hell is progressive rock?
It's a genre of rock music, most popular in the 70's. it was made with people withe a long attention spans and stoners in mind. the most famous band in this genre is probably Pink Floyd.

Dream Theatre, they're not from around the 70s but they're my favourite prog rock band.

What about The Doors? Glad to see other people here know of Yes.

I'm a bit surprised no one's mentioned Muse yet. Oh yes, their music is so delicious.
