I love the Alien films, even 3 and Resurrection (though not the AvP films, they're terrible) and of them all Alien is easily my favourite, and one of my all time top 10 films.

So you can imagine how excited I was when it was announced Ridley Scott was working on a new film in the series... and then they said that it's not an Alien film, it's a spin-off, or a sort of prequel, or something.

I don't know what to think of it. The trailer references Alien very heavily - sound design, visual style (mostly), the 'space jockey' ship, and has the exact same title design as the original film. If Ridley is on form it should be great.

I just can't shake the feeling that it's going to come across as a missed opportunity. I'm not even sure why. Just a feeling.

Anyway, the trailer is right up there What do you think?

I'm fucking amped....He had better get the Alien series back on the right track.

So, how many must see movies does this make for 2012 now?

Wow, it's like a copy and paste of Alien, although I must say I preferred the aesthetics of the original Alien trailer.

(Here it is for anyone who is interested)
I prefer the way the original loses the lettering for most of the action shots, I think it gets in the way of the Prometheus trailer's scenes

I can't really describe how I feel about the idea of Scott making a film so blinking similar to Alien if it's not meant to be in the same universe. That would be like Lucas creating a new "Planet Wars" franchise. What's the point of making a new movie that is basically one you made before with a few changes, and to do it so blatantly with the trailer, same font and title style, same music, multiple similarities and nods in the scenes chosen (32 seconds in, guy grabbing helmet and screaming, looks like a facehugger on him.)

The only way they could have ripped it off more was to use the "in space no one can hear you scream" tagline.

(Of course, all I said goes out the window if this new movie is actually meant to be in the same universe as Alien, It's just that no one seems to know if it is or not yet.)

Since Ridley is behind this film it could be good. I'm just abit confuse that is it a preclude/ references to the first Alien film, will we see the Alien or at least a facehugger?

Yeah, watching it again and reading the comments here, I'm starting to get the dreadful feeling that's what it will be - a remake, or 're-imagining' as they'd probably call it.

The only things that puts me off calling it as a proper prequel are a couple of the visuals - instead of alien eggs there are metallic (?) containers, and the suits the people are wearing look much too high tech and 'sci-fi' for the ALien universe.

Both could be explained. If the xenomorphs were created as a bio-weapon then this could be before they get loose and kill their creators, and the suits could be justified as a highly financed and well equipped expedition having much better equipment than a freighter like the Nostromo.

Maybe. 20th Century Fox have a horrible record of mismanaging this franchise and I wouldn't put it past them to get Ridley back and then screw him over with script rewrites and budget cuts. Ah well... cautiously optimistic that it'll be good anyway.

Though I am secretly hoping this is intentional misdirection and a month before it's due for release we'll get a new trailer under the real title, Alien 5.

OH MY GOOOOOOOOOOD.
First off, Ridley Scott has said that there will be no xenomorphs, facehuggers or chestbursters. At least not ones we are aware of. This is not a remake, it's a prequel. But a prequel which goes further back, before the xenomorph we knew. It should also be mentioned that those urns probably don't house any facehuggers and aren't eggs.

This will not be an Alien film. It's set in the same universe but it's more of a Space Jockey film. It will be explaining a lot about the derelict and raising more questions. I can't wait for it to come out.

Why not? Ridley has already done a fantastic horror-film, why make another one? If it had aliens, I'm sure many more people will complain about them milking the franchise. This is taking it in a new direction, the Space Jockeys. The ones who made the aliens.

EGE: Final question. I have a feeling what the answer will be, but many want to know. Will we see the original xenomorph in Prometheus?

RS: No. Absolutely not. They squeezed it dry. He (the xenomorph) did very well. (He laughs) He survived, he?s now in Disneyland in Orlando, and no way am I going back there. How did he end up in Disneyland? I saw him in Disneyland, Jesus Christ!

I think they're going to go overboard with the CGI and fuck it up just like how Lucas fucked up Star Wars and Indiana Jones.

Make no mistake I will see it opening night as I've been hooked on the Alien movies since I was 5 and saw Aliens.

Im pretty sure its not a remake, even if it turns out the same...the intention isnt to "remake" the movie as far a I can tell

No...no we don't...especially considering what Alien 3 COULD have been. They were going to have the xenomorphs invade earth and the Marines coming into battle them, like Aliens only on a bigger scale. How they turned it into the POS that Alien 3 was, I have no idea.

I quite liked 3 and 4. Neither are as good as the first two films, but 3 has some good moments and a lot of atmosphere, and 4 is entertaining. Given all the behind the scenes shenanigans in 3's development it's a minor miracle they managed to come up with something even watchable, and mostly coherent.

I am so very cautiously excited for this. I was doubtful at first, actually, I'm still very much doubtful. Yet, I can't help but hope this is a return to form for Ridley Scott, I haven't liked any of his work after Bladerunner.
What is most noteworthy is how (the trailer) seems to capture the spirit of Alien (the only Alien film I like, Aliens is alright) rather well. I love that film, so, wow, a new movie I may like, neat.

Oh, so it's going to be about the huge dead alien skeleton at the beginning of the first movie? Awesome! I've always wondered about that.

No it has nothing to do with Alien or the Alien universe, it was originally written as a prequel but then Scott changed his mind and now it's its own thing and is different from Alien

Prometheus is about the common origins of Humanity and Xenomorph. It is indeed linked to that large alien skeleton found in the first movie.

Oh, he then changed his mind again... If you've seen the trailer... this is very much a prequel. It at the very least inhabits the same universe.

Almost exactly my (annotated) own sentiments. I would like to note that the spacecraft is indeed very similar, if not identical to the design of the "Derelict" craft on planet LV-426 seen in Alien.

Off-Topic: I never quite got the "cracked, oozing egg"-graphic used in the Alien franchise/mythos. :S
I guess by the time the series became sci-fi cult classics Scott said "screw it", & and just kept it. :p
