Anders Breivik, the right-wing extremist who has confessed to killing 77 people during a murder spree in Norway last summer, played the violent computer game World of Warcraft nearly seven hours a day for several consecutive months before his attack, prosecutors say.
This one from ABC News, folks.

And what if someone who went on a violent killing spree watched Thomas the Tank Engine seven hours a day for several consecutive months? Blame it on Tommy man, he's at fault!

Seriously, some people just need to accept some god damned responsibility.

That's from the prosecution.

I wonder how many of them actually know what WoW is. Makes you think....

I remembered reading about this on the Escapist not long ago. So I found the article.

http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/116848-Norwegian-Mass-Murderer-Defends-Gaming-Habits

He says WoW had nothing to do with it, but he does admit to using Call of Duty: Modern Warfare to train. So...why is WoW the issue here? It's already stupid that the fact that he was a gamer is making news. But ABC seems to be going after the wrong game anyway. I mean, it's...it's...

Plus there's the fact that he KILLED A BUNCH OF PEOPLE. I don't think a World of Warcraft addiction is the nail in the coffin the prosecution needs to put him away.

As Yahtzee would say - that is pants on head retarded.

Didnt this bloke come out and say he'd used CoD as training? While stupid, it's slightly less stupid than WoW influencing him.

Well, the man apparently doesn't listen to black metal (for which I'm really happy, otherwise there would have been no end to the rain of bullshit annoyance), so I guess they had to find something else.
However, as Witty Name Here says, WoW isn't a bloodfest exactly. Raises the question of whether prosecution, psychologist or anyone involved as ever laid eyes on the game. Breivik said it doesn't have anything to do with his case. I'd have added "you ignorant scaremongering cockbags".

What I don't understand is why prosectution and media keep using this kind of bullshit. I mean, shouldn't we have stopped when the beatle's recordings showed a definite lack of satanistic content when played backwards?

Clearly he was planning to bubble hearth. Damn nutty Paladins do that all the time.

My horrible humor aside, it's really hard to even imagine WoW as super violent. Despite the squickiness of WoTLK, I don't think there's next to any blood, and your "kill count" stays relatively low compared to some other games.
Back when I played that game some guy ran up killed all the action house people and tried to Bubble hearth. I hit shattering throw and he was dead in 3 seconds. Back on topic though I don't see that WOW is a lot of things but it's not going to get people to start shooting up the place.

I don't think there is any game (or other piece of art or entertaining) that will "make people" kill other people/themselves or commit any crime whatsoever. A person hearing a song telling him to amputate his neighbour's kidney with a secateur and then *proceeding to do so* is just batshit crazy. As in: he could have done the same because his neighbour has a motorcycle and he doesn't (something similar happened to a friend of mine).

all I can really say to the phrase "violent world of warcraft" is lol.

It's a colorful cartoon game where cartoon elves fight cartoon dwarves.

It's next expansion pack has a race of adorable panda people.

Wonder if they realise this sort of shit is exactly what he wants to happen, they're playing right into his hand and they don't even seem to realise it.

It doesn't actually look like anybody but the article is blaming video games. Prosecutors asked him about his video game habit, seeing as how it's a pretty big part of his life. An expert claims that he couldn't differentiate between video games and his real life, clearly because they're angling for some sort of mental illness argument. I love how they had to stretch to get it sounding like the prosecution are saying anything about the link, with meaningless comments like 'According to prosecutors, Breivik played Warcraft under the aliases "Andersnordic" and "Conservatism."'
Just lazy journalism I suppose, another stock standard 'blame the games' attempt at an article when nobody is doing that.

So the guy kills a summer camp or something, says call of duty was his training simulator, and yet somehow the prosecutor still picks a dumb choice? We need new law people.

..What the hell? World of Warcraft? Really?

At least Call of Duty actually has guns and normal looking human beings in it going for it, not cartoon graphics and oversized bladed objects.

If we are going to blame video games for sociopaths, at least put it more than 10 seconds of thought of how you could possibly stretch the concepts to fit the crime..

This is the more important portion of the article, not the WoW part. Nothing good has ever come from right-wing extremists. Or left-wing extremists, for that matter.

It is pretty hilarious that they call WoW violent though. What does that make games like Mortal Kombat? UBER GORE RAAAWR?

Honestly though, anyone who blames video games, movies, TV, or music for ANYTHING related to human behavior is an idiot. You must already be mentally unstable to be susceptible to the influence of violent media. In which case, the mental instability is the culprit, not the media in question.

Well, it's not like he's hiding his political orientation; he has endeavoured to become the representation of everything social-democratic Norway hates and fears, and succeded quite well.

I don't really see how they're "playing into his hands", though. Did he voluntarily bring this up to make the world see how silly and uninformed journalists and/or law people can be? Because that is not new and it's not clever.

Exactly.
