Ok, I'm finally getting a PlayStation 2. (I know I'm behind the times but whatever.) My problem is that, (like Windows Vista), there are several different versions, all of which seem the same. So, is there a difference between them (hardware wise)? or is it just aesthetic?

BTW, So far as I can tell on amazon, there are three versions, the original, the slim and the black.

P.S. search bar approved (I think)

Any help will be greatly appreciated :)

Umm, from what I'm aware of, they are essentially all the same, its just personal preference...but i have the PS2 Slim...and from what I've tried and heard, it can't play normal DVD movies, unlike the other ones...so ya, basically its just your own preference

What are you talking about? The Slim can play DVD movies.

I recommend a Slim, they work great and they are very small and lightweight. Plus it has a built in modem (something the original didn't have)

Get a slim.

Buy Guitar Hero 2, Shadow of the Collusus, Metal Gear Solid 3, Ratchet and Clank: Up Your Arsenal, Marvel vs Capcom 2, Burnout: Revenge, Devil May Cry 3, Grand Theft Auto: Vice City, Persona 4, We Love Katamari, Silent Hill 2, Okami, Resident Evil 4, Ico, Tekken: Tag Tournament, Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 4 and Final Fantasy XII.

These are all classic games that i would reccomend.
Jak and Daxter, Ratchet and Clank, Ratchet and Clank: Going Commando should be added to that list.

I forgot Jak and Daxter (I'd go with Jak 2) but i'm only picking one game from each series. And Ico and Shadow of the Collussus don't count as a series.
Jak 2 was actually my least favorite in the series, but whatever.

There's three models. The fat one, the silver one, and the slim one. They're all pretty similar. The fat one seems a lot stronger, as my slims have had a habit of breaking. My fat one is still working.

They both have their advantages and disadvantages. The Slim has a built in modem. That's true.

firts version
you can add a hard drive to it
you need to buy the network adapter to play on line (wich isnt really necesary)
i you want the dvd remote control you need to get the one with the receptor

slim
it comes with the network port
you dont need the receptor to use the dvd remote control
it look fairly better and uses less space

you can play dvds on both
you can install a mod chip on both (to play original games that werent released in your area)
there are batteries and screens for both if you make them portable

i have the first version and a had have any trouble playing any game.

over all they a basically the same.

Most reliable are the later model fat versions. Slimline ones moved the PS1 compatability into emulation and that affects their performance somewhat. The slim ones are also more delicate than the fat ones (which may or may not be important depending on your pet/younger sibling situation). The thin one has a network adapter built in, but that's largely irrelevant as most (possibly all) the PS2 game servers are shut down, certainly all the online games worth playing (SOCOM, MGS3) are no longer supported.

Both versions come in Black or Silver (black version out first both times), as far as I know the three version of the PS2 were the PS2 original model (fat), PS2 slimline (thin) and the PSX (white, 400gb media centre version, rare as gold hens teeth and about as valuable).

The fat ones have better functionality, so I'd recommend one of those.

Um i believe this man was asking what type of Ps2 he should purchase..not to list all your favorite games and completely avoid the question. Make your own seperate and overdone thread thank you. Moving on from that little bit i have the original and it still works great controllers like to piss out on me every once in a while but the system still doing just fine. I recommend the big bulky one due to the fact it can do pretty much anything that the slim can do with the exception of the built-in modem and what not, but dont boggle yourself with that stuff
