Hello Escapists, as the thread titles says; I want people to recommend me a JRPG to get; but when it comes to titles I barely know one or two.

For starters, I got Valkyria Chronicles, and Resonance of fate, and I have to say, that I really enjoyed both of them, for different reasons, I don't regret buying them at all. I'm really fan of the SNES era JRPGs, Breath of Fire, Secret of Mana, Chrono Trigger, and Final Fantasy 6 or 3 however you want to call it. I also enjoyed most JRPGs on PSX pre FF VII like Wild Arms and Breath of Fire 3 (Though I don't recall if the late is pre or post, but you catch my drift).

I'm really looking for something that got a little of that old school JRPGs, great characters, a story that fitted them and a combat system that doesn't requires to read a bible-like book to learn.

I got to say, in my country there are practically no titles, I went to a game store, and they shrugged when I asked the same I'm asking to you. They're all up to get imports if I name titles, so that's why I'm asking, to get a little feedback of what's cooking for JRPGs on PS3, and also, why not having a discussion about it? I'm attached to the titles mentioned above, and I kinda reject anything FF like, after the seventh, mostly because everyone tried to imitate it so much it had no substance whatsoever, but I know these games sold quite well, then at least something good about them can be said, so if you're into them, feel free to discuss about it.

I hated that Valkyria continued on the PSP, and Resonance while entertaining, the combat system was either too easy, or too hard, I timed how long can a battle last, and it wasn't much, some people might say it's dynamic, but it was most a race against time, if a battle lasted longer than it should, the one in troubles would always be the player, with that scramble thinga-majigger, and one hit cheap kills. Still, it was fun, frustrations aside.

So, what is there to look for and why would you say "check this one out"?

PS: English is not my native language, so I might be expressing myself wrongly, have my apologies beforehand. =)

Suikoden II. It's an absolute classic jRPG with excellent characters, story and innovative gameplay. Fun minigames, large world to explore...just get it.

It's an old PS1 title though so your best bet would be the PSN store.

Feel free to recommend them anyways, up to this point, it's far better than nothing, of course, leave FF XIII out of the list, one of my buddies lend it to me, and I could not stand more than a couple of hours.

I'm not talking about Western RPGs because they are far more accessible for PS3 around here, and I already know what I like and what I don't. I don't want to look like I'm dissing them.

"White Knight Chronicles"(PS3) is getting a sequel soon and if I've heard right it'll include the content from the 1st game as well so it'll be like two games for the price of one. The Basic combat is easy to grasp but has a bit of a learning curve to it in order to get the best usage out of it.

I'll re-recommend Suikoden II as well but I don't believe it's on PSN's PS1 classics yet but they do have the first game,Though the 3rd and up are all PS2 games.

"Legend of Dragoon" (PS1/P.S.N.:Classic) Is also made around the time FF:VII and Wild Arms came out. Like W.K.C. It has a simple basic combat system but has rewards for mastering the timing for bigger attacks

You should look into Lost Odyssey. It has a great story, the old school turn base combat and I think its 100000 times better than final fantasy 13.

Alrighty sorry for the late response here. FFXIII happens to be one of my favs so i'll ignore the hate.

Cross Edge.
Agarest War zero and just Argest war (only on psn) Zero you can buy a hard copy.
Trinity Universe.
Disgaea 3 and as of September 6 Disgaea 4.

Do not trust the reviews for these games. Cross edge is one of my favorites of all time yet got horrid reviews. Look at game play see for yourself i highly recommend all of them. Just bewary that Agarest war and Disgaea are tactical JRPGS. Also all those games besides Agarest war are full of humor, still serious but chock full of good laughs. I'd give you more but i cant see my game shelf atm.

Most of JRPG reviews are rather harsh, I only view video reviews to get glimpses of the gameplay.
I remember Resonance getting pummeled in lots of reviews, but in the end, it's a good game.

Now onto what you recommended so far (Thank you):

I will get PSX classics, though I played Suikoden, the first one at least, I know it's good, I'm getting it anyway. I haven't heard of Legend of Dragoon, if it's on PS Store, I'll get it next time I get credit on my account.

White knight Chronicles:
From what I see, the MMO combat style is a bit of a turn off, but it seems worth trying, reminds me of Shin Megami Tensei IMAGINE, which is not bad, I will look into this further later.

Lost Odyssey looks really good, but I don't own a Xbox 360, too bad.

Cross Edge: Wow, I can't imagine a Crossover JRPG could ever work, then again, Kingdom Hearts was good. It looks okay, a battle system classic, yet a bit refreshing. Also noted for further research.

Agarest War Zero: Looks pretty basic, if I get a bundle I'll get it, though I read they recycled a lot of stuff from other games, can anyone confirm this? I want to know how lazy is the design of this game.

Disgaea series: Is there a continuity with previous titles? I haven't got the chance to play the PS2 versions, and if there is, I don't think 3 and 4 would make a good experience, even if gameplay wise looks fair enough.

Trinity Universe: Again, I can't imagine how Crossovers would work, except as obvious Cash-ins, but if it's fun to play, might as well try it.

Thanks again for the recommendations, I'll be seeing how expensive will the imports cost me, and get them when I can.

I'm waiting for Tales of Eternia (Tales of Destiny 2 in the States) to be available on PSN =D

Not on the store yet. Suikoden 1 is, though.

OP:White Knight 2 comes out on the 13th of September. It also comes with an udgraded version of the original game, so yay.

FFXIII is fun, if you're not completely stuck on tradition. The game is a lot like FFX, so if you didnt like that game, stay away.

Star Ocean The Last Hope is also good, especially since the PS3 version has a Jap. language option.

Hope that helps.
I loved Star Ocean 2, but I really lost track of the series afterwards. I remember watching the intro in Unskippable, and seemed like it had a lot of hateable characters, as for FF as a whole, the only 3d one that I enjoyed for its gameplay was FF VIII, with the magic stock grinding statuses, and the Guardians, storywise was sort of a mess, but I didn't mind that much back then.

I haven't finished FF IX, but never got into the characters, so I don't miss it.

Final Fantasy X was terrible for me, and the fact that it got a pseudo sequel called X-2 was ridiculous, even more than the game itself, so you might already know what I think about FF XIII-2 title, but gameplay wise it seems they finally understood what didn't work on FF XIII... hopefully.

I got sort of distant with FF since X, I could never play XI and I heard friends saying it was good, I don't even know what's XII is about, and XIII, again, was a let down, mostly because I loved the SNES ones which are stored in a 24 mb cartridge or so... I can't believe a Bluray or three DVDs couldn't make justice to the series. Again, this is my opinion.

I would try Nier, it has an amazing story, voice acting and music. The gameplay is a little bit weak, but not enough to make it not worth playing.

Just a quick question, I don't want to spam my own thread: Isn't Demon's Souls some sort of Online only? It still got a server working? It sounded stupid in my head something like that, but you never know...

no, you can play demon's souls offline. you just won't get access to the hint messages system

check out yakuza 3 and 4. they are not classic rpgs, but they have elements of it (open world, random encounters, upgrading powers and weapons, tons of side quests and things you can do and lengthy story driven main quest )

they also happen to be excellent games.

Eternal Sonata. Not too complicated, fun cartoonish look. Mix of Direct Control and Turn Based combat. It's pretty decent. Music is excellent, worth it alone.

Thanks for the info Juventus, I've played Yakuza 3 & 4, being a Shenmue fan, I couldn't let them go =)

Eternal Sonata was heavily bashed, and while I take it with a huge grain of salt, the videos I saw didn't help. Might get more data before judging it, thanks.

DEEEEEEEEEMOOOOOOONS SOOOOOOOOOOULS! The greatest jrpg of this generation.
I see your Demon's Souls and raise you-
Tales of Vesperia

However, as for as OP goes, I realize this is a big if. Vesperia was already a great RPG as is for the 360. And if the PS3 version (that as of right now is Japan-only) is brought here, it will be amazing with all the extra content they added.
Sadly however, Namco Tales Studio likes being very bizarre with how they transfer things to the US. The only reason I bring it up is so you can keep an eye on it if it does become available.

Most of it was said here, I'll just mention cross edge again, it's really damn good, the story is more lighthearted and funny but the battle system is amazingly deep.

Also, give Ar Tonelico 3 a shot (there's no continuity but the older ones rock too) as well as Atelier Rorona and Atelier Totori.

Trust me experimental. Look at the game ignore its a cross over. Just look at as a game, they dont even throw around alot of inside jokes you wont get.

Disgaea has very limited continuty, you wont have to worry at all! Trust me, i told my friend to get into the series he started with 3 and loved it. Give a shot or check it out.

Agarest war, yes thats true it does recycle some enemies from many of idea Factorys games. Doesn't mean its bad. Still a great series and extremely complex and difficult.

Cross edge is by far the most complex jrpg on the ps3, i love it.

Again am not forcing you but please give them games a chance look em up, don't think of them as cross overs if you can. There good and even have there own set of original characters that are so great and memorable. You might be turned of because of the SD sprites though. its all your choice just give em a chance. You don't have to know any of the previous characters. Idea Factorys games are also great because there honestly not your standard JRPGS, there very different to most people who's only real experiance was final fantasy.

I'll continue to follow this thread and answer any questions or pm me. I have no clue why but i really wanna help answer questions as some of this games are very close to my heart.

Oh Drekio thank you!!! Finally someone else to support Cross edge. The game can get pretty serious, not sure if it was just me but Judas's speech at the end was pretty damn intense and emotional.

Just because it's lighthearted doesn't mean it's not serious too, hell even Toma in Agarest war had a serious moment or two. It's just that most of the time it's more about the characters interacting in epic and funny ways than saving the world or lovers being torn apart and whatnot.

I liked the part with Demitri the best; "A wise man speaks when he has something to say, a fool speaks when he has to say something.", such epic philosophy! :D
