so my 16-month old PS3 started having palpitations yesterday during a bout of cod4. Never knew before but it's got a mega-loud fan inside. Presumably it's dust build up blocking the airways. When this happens on my laptop I normally take as much of it apart as I can then use canned air to blast out the mothballs, which can get pretty solid at times.

I hate the noise (reminds me of work environment) and was one of the main reasons I dropped my laptop for a netbook and why I loved the PS3 gaming experience so much.

Anyone know a good methodical way of removing the dust from the PS3 system?

Am I the only one that understood the title as "PS3 noisy fan(boy) attack"?

I think you can try compressed air, opening the console might void the warranty.

yeah but as my PS3's over a year old I don't really think that matters too much.

sorry about fanboy confusion lol I'm not really into the flamewars thing

Yeah, PS3 fans tend to be noisy. When taken out of context!

That's weird, though, my fan is actually quiet.

yeah mine was too until last night. I actually switched the thing off straight away cos I thought it was gonna blow lol. Googled it and apparently the ps3 has a really noisy secondary fan built in that isn't normally used. So it must be that.

Compressed air (like you said) or vacuum cleaner at the vents, don't go opening anything up, it would be nice if you could just open them up like PCs, but I can't see Sony liking that too much.

Glad I'm not the only one who thought he might be actually having a problem with his fan.
If you have a 40gig ps3 try this:

If i were you I'd just check the air flow around the console; It's recommended that you have a minimum of 5 inches of air space above the vents on the top (if you store your ps3 vertically) Although i probably dont have that much with mine, and it's not too noisy, so i'd say its dust in yours:)
