Hello Escapist

Now I have come across something that has been inching on my mind and that's the control system for the PS3. I like the controller and I am comfortable with it when is comes to racing games and fighting games but when it comes to shooting the analogy's just feel weird to me. Yes even when I change the sensitivity it just feels out of place a little. When I was using the Xbox controller the shooting felt smoother and controlled. Maybe it's just the certain game or maybe it's just be and how my thumbs work or the different positions of the left analogy stick on the PS3 controller to the Xbox controller.

The games I am referring too are Mass Effect 3, GTA 4 and 5, COD: MW2 and MW3, and others I can't think of yet.

But which do you think is easier to handle AND getting use too and for what genre of gaming?

Thank you for any help and comment given.

I feel the 360 controller has better analogue sticks and back two buttons (triggers) while the PS3 pad has a better D-pad and front two buttons (L1 and R1).

For most genres I really dont care what pad I use but for FPS games I much prefer a 360 pad and Fighting games I much prefer a PS3 pad.

I don't have a problem with the DualShock's analog sticks and I play online shooters a lot. Of course, the triggers on the 360 are better but I'm so used to using L1 and R1 for shooting that I don't think it actually matters since I'm not using the DualShock's triggers to shoot. The DualShock just allows for better controls even in shooters because all the buttons are analog. For example, in Metal Gear Online, you used the d-pad to lean left and right and the d-pad is analog on the DualShock so it wouldn't be as good on the 360 if the game was on 360. Also, Metal Gear Online had no aim-assist whatsoever and the aiming was better than any shooter I've ever played because developers think console players need aim-assist thus I'm fighting with every shooter's aim-assist when I go to aim. The Metal Gear Solid HD collection on 360 had to change the controls a bit because the 360's buttons aren't analog.

Took the words right out of my mouth mind . I find the D pad on the xbox controler to be clunky as hell but the analogue stick is great for shooting things.

Once i modified my 360 controller, the dpad has been perfectly fine. Aside from fighting games, i greatly prefer the 360 controller.
Easier PC compatibility (although i use the DS3 Xinput wrapper for PC) and the controller feels more comfortable for my hands.

The 360 controller fits in my hands more comfortably I like the joysticks better for shooting. The PS3 controller makes my hands cramp up when I'm using the triggers for gas in a racing game and the joysticks feel squirrelly although that might just be from frequent use.

The PS3 has a vastly better D-pad, which is a godsend for fighting games and games that rely heavily upon it, but I have to give it to the 360 controller in most every other way. The PS3's weird triggers feel clunky during games with lots of shooting, and has an overall less solid feel to it than the 360 controller IMO.

PS3 controllers may be more durable, but for online games like Halo where I need every advantage I can get, I would vastly prefer the 360 controller.

The PS3 is the only controller of the two that can drive me to smashing it up the wall levels of frustration, games like God of War where you have to mash the triggers are almost impossible. Trying to pull off some of the finishing moves is almost impossible at times, the 360 controller feels sturdier too. Thats swings and roundabouts though I guess, the PS3 controller comes with a rechargeable battery as standard where as you have to spend out extra to get one for the 360 controller.

I have massive hands and find that the 360 controllers fit me better and are more comfortable for both my hands and wrists. I also prefer the 360's triggers and stick set up. Only complaint is the D-pad can be hard to use at times.

360 is better when comparing controllers. The PS3 is just, I dont know if its spacing or angles of its sticks or whatever, but its not as comfortable to use.

Pretty much this. The D-pad in the 360 is not very good, and the L2-R2 buttons in the PS3 are garbage. Other than that, its pretty much the same. I use a lot of the dualshock since I am used to them by years of practice, but many people find the asymmetrical shape of the 360 controller more comfortable.

Though i love to shit on M$ at every possibility i must be honest here and say i have no issues with either. The PS3 feels more precise perhaps but on the other hand the Xbox controller is a more comfortable fit especially for long sessions such as with a JRPG....shame the 360 isnt exactly the home of a ton of JRPGs :(

My personal preference has always been the 360 controller. It fits my hands perfectly. I think it's the best controller ever designed. The PS3 controller just feels awkward in my hands. Also, I don't play fighting games, so the 360 D-pad has never been an issue for me. Also, once I got used to the placement of the thumbsticks on the 360, I had a really hard time going back to the PS3 controller.

I think the 360 controller is the best for shooting by far, mostly due to the triggers. It's my favorite controller overall too. For the PS3 one I had to buy ribbed rubber(oh yeah) pads for the sticks and triggers for the L2/R2 buttons to make it somewhat comfortable.
Cat broke my triggers. :(

I also have very large hands. Seems people with smaller hands doesn't prefer the 360 one as much.

I'll always prefer PlayStation controllers.

It's nice and compact, which makes navigating it easy. L1/R1 are vastly superior to LB/RB (which barely even feel like buttons), and I've never really taken issue with the PS3's marshmallows (though in all honesty I kind of hate "trigger" buttons regardless).

The D-pad comparison really goes without saying. And I think the symmetry of the analog sticks in more comfortable, and it helps make the D-pad more user-friendly by having it in an easy location (underneath the stick always felt really weird to me).

I also prefer the feel of the PS face buttons. The 360's feel kind of stiff, and their being rounded isn't something I'm a fan of either.

The DualShock just feels better in my hands, too. (Let it be known that I don't have small hands.) The 360 controller feels big and clunky. If it has no battery pack, it feels far too thin and empty in the back. If it does, it feels too heavy and that there's something in my hands' way on the back.

For shooters the Xbox 360 controller is the best hands down. Those triggers on the Dualshock 3 are probably the worst triggers ever.
