PS3 outselling the 360 already?

EDIT: By the title I was inferring all those articles about the PS3's climbing sales that say "the PS3 is looking up, but still has a long way to go before it catches up with the 360 blah blah blah." Yes, I know it's been out 3 years, stop picking apart my semantics and focus on the issue.

This seems like a dumb question, but I was doing a research paper on game consoles, looking at some figures, and a thought hit me.

PS3 units sold: ~29,million, climbing fast.
Xbox 360 units sold: ~39,million, climbing steadily.
Xbox 360 failure rate: somewhere around 40% according to surveys, falling thanks to hardware updates. ([a html="http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/94106-Microsoft-Responds-to-360-Failure-Rate-Survey"]link[/a])

The questions on my mind are:

1) Whether that's an accurate failure rate at all,
2) Whether the units sold takes into account failed consoles,
3) What the PS3's failure rate is like.

If that's accurate and the units sold INCLUDES failed consoles rather than excluding them, then the actual units sold for the 360 is more like 23,million, assuming the overly simplified case that everybody whose 360 failed got replaced once and assuming the PS3's failure rate isn't high enough to care about.

Frankly I don't have all the facts here and feel like I'm BOUND to have a lot of inaccuracies in this wild guessing game of mine, so I figured I'd share this thought with the Escapist and see what everybody else came back with. Someone's gotta be better-informed about these numbers than I am. So, guys? What about it? Is the PS3 ALREADY out-distributing the 360, or am I just reading the numbers wrong?

EDIT:
1 - This isn't a question of which console is better, this is a question about whether our distribution numbers are accurate.
2 - As several folks have pointed out, my assumptions hinge on the 360s being exchanged at retailers (as mine was) rather than being traded in directly with Microsoft or sent in for repairs on the warranty. A retail exchange would fluff the numbers up some as the numbers I plucked are units shipped to retailers, whereas a direct exchange with Microsoft wouldn't.

I can not imagine the 360's failure rate to be 40%. there is no way it's that high.

Well, I could care less about console wars, but...

I suppose it's possible the 360 has a 40% failure rate, but there is no way all of those failures account for re-purchases. Mine has failed twice; twice I've sent it in, it's been repaired and returned to me. Same console. Just sayin'.

...Already? What does that even mean? Are we in a parallel dimension where the systems were just released yesterday?

well, the PS3 has a failrate too. It's not as bad as the 360s, but it's there. They're not infallible machines.

I also think 40% is a bit high. It may have been 40% over a year, at launch, but it's far lower now. better chipsets have been introduced in every SKU of the 360 released, so the failrate on the newer ones is probably about 15%... which is pretty close to what I'd imagine the PS3's is.

Microsoft also has better tech support for their failed 360s (at least RRoDs), and have a 3 year extended warranty for RRoD. Considering the large % of failures are RRoDs, and those are usually replaced by Microsoft for free, the actual "must buy a new 360" failrate is actually a lot lower then that.

PS3's doing fine. They have some great exclusives now. 360's doing fine as well. They too have some great exclusives and reasons to buy the system.

It's time for the console wars to take a breather. It can commence again once there's another clearly superior system.

Finally PS3s getting recognition and being seen for the wonderful console it is.
I agree and I love your new avatar
Why thank you.

IcyLemon made it for me. Or he at least resized it when I couldn't figure out how to do it.

I'm not interested in the console war or your personal preferences, I'm interested in distribution. Keep it objective here, people.

360 failure rate was closer to 20%. PS3 failure rate is about 9%. If either console fails within three years you get it repaired free, anyway, so it still counts as a sale. It's not like people get the RROD and just throw the console out, lol.
No, but they can also exchange it at a retailer like I did, which'd be another unit shipped to a retailer. Depending on how many people do it that way it'd fluff the numbers up some.

I dunno, either I'm incredibly unlucky or 40% is kinda generous... I know 5 people who I regularly talk to who have 360s, and I've personally gone through 5 360s (before they updated the warranty and 3 of them were microsoft refurbished and I have since stopped buying them) one of my friends has gone through 2, his sister has also gone through two of her own, his little brother's still on his first one, same with another friend, and my friend in alaska is on his second.

so... we've got a combined record of 10/15 here, which seems closer to the "66% hardware failure rate" reported here not too terribly long ago.

edited for repetition.

I say your figures seem to be pretty good for a rough estimate. Also, I don't know if we can call the PS3 a gem, but I do trust mine more than my 360. I say that if Microsoft planned on a failure rate to make up costs than it doesn't really matter if Sony out sells them in the end, they've already made a huge profit by selling multiple units to one person. I hope this isn't true, but I can see the advantage.

I was going to complain about some of the PS3 quirks I don't like but that's for another discussion.

Well, that's just dandy. It's interesting to see the numbers presented this way - although, I think the use of the word "already" in your title is a bit mis-leading; the PS3's been out for what, over 3 years now? And it JUST caught up to the 360.

Yeah, according to a poll on this forum the failure rate's more like 60%, but that's a volunteer sample. That's the problem with statistical studies on the level of MILLIONS. You never know when you're getting accurate numbers, even IF you get a statistically significant sample of subjects. Like some folks said earlier, though, not all the failures are exchanged at retail, so my numbers aint so hot either...

Not my intention with the title. The way the numbers are usually presented lately is generally with the phrase, "improving, but still has a long way to go before it catches up to the 360."

off topic... isnt it weird that the newer the console is, the more problems it has??

nes, atari, snes, playstation1... all ofthese are working fine, and have always worked fine, hell even the xbox1 was better than this generation overall.

360s failure rate is extremely high. I'm glad mine hasn't broke yet, I still feel it's my favourite console as it is.

Nope, the Atari Jaguar is a piece of crap, the Jaguar CD is a piece of crap, and so's the Commodore 64. Don't even get me started on the Atari 5200. Some consoles just work better than others, period.

Too bad my PS3 can't connect to the goddamn internet.

Oh well it still has all the best games.
