Let me start by saying that I cut my teeth on the firs the Sega, then mostly the PS1 so I'm aware of Sony's quality (I had that PS1 for about 7 years).

I've been a 360 owner for a long time (mainly because all my friends had 360s). But I just sold my 360 and am considering buying a PS3 but I don't know much about it other than it has a blu-ray player.

What are the benefits to the PS3? Is the online community any good? Are the exclusive titles any good?

Also, I'm in this border-less limbo of feeling like I'm too old for video games (I'm 26, been gaming since about age 9), and I don't know whether or not I want to invest $250 into another video game system. Can I get more out of it than just video games?

Ok, I'm 34, don't kid yourself ... games are fun.

I have both systems and as for PS3 benefits, it is easy. Blu-ray is your main benefit. Also, they aren't as big a bag of A3 holes as the M$ group when it comes to things third parties can do on their online system. Look at portal II if you are a fan; PC and PS3 players can compete and you'll get some benefits from steam to begin with. Free DLC? Ask Valve what happened when they wanted to do that for the XBox players vs the PS3 players. Yea, Sony got hacked but it won't be long till M$ suffers something similar and that you can count on. And that is just the tip of the iceberg. Oh yea, and one other thing ... PS3 is wireless out of the box with a nice HDD ... good luck with that one on the XBox.

So, my recommendation is find out what you want, compare the two systems, and then go from there. Have fun.

Don't mean to start a flame war but I think Microsoft will manage it much better then sony did even if they did get hacked :p

Well... Free online, Cross Platform Play, Amazing Exclusives, A nicer community, Wireless compatibility, blu-ray, Internet searching, Built in hard drive, Family oriented.

I have both systems. PS3 obviously has the upper hand.

If you get an old "fat" model, it come in useful as a weapon incase a burgler comes into your house. The Xbox 360 has always looked a bit flimsy in that regard.

The exclusives are pretty good, you get your Uncharteds, Infamous's, Valkyria Chronicles, Demon Souls, Little Big Planet's and probably more that I haven't played. Depends on what you want game wise. One thing you will notice being a PS3 owner though is that you will have to wait months to play stuff like DLC or multiformat games if Microsoft have signed some sort off timed exclusivity deal, which can be annoying.

For me, I was more interested in the PS3's exclusives (Versus the 360's) and it's online service doesn't make you pay out the ass for a basic feature.

Well, the exclusives, both in number and quality, blow the 360's out of the water (opinion). Its online is free so no more monthly/yearly fees (fact), and its fan is fantastically quiet.

Oh yes, also, Multidisk games are a thing of the past.

I'm an xbox 360 owner and I have to admit I envy the ps3 online community, free online better online features. Xbox lives only got last fm and zune(woopie). OP, get the ps3 if you want more stuff for paying a membership fee, much better value.

Basically this. It will probably also have a longer life-span, considering the memory size of Blu-Ray, the higher processing power of the Cell and the fact that so far it's sold steadily, yet Sony hasn't made as much of a profit as it would like to.

I'd say the exclusives, like everyone does, but also I'd say blu-ray player is important. I'd also say reliability (DISCLAIMER: NOT A FANBOY, I BOUGHT MY XBOX FIRST [and third, and fourth, and fifth, and sixth and counting]), great games on the store like Flower, and the dashboard XrossMediaBar thing doesn't condescend you, it just gives you crisp, clear information. No silly forced Miis, no useless features shoved down your throat, and most of all the adverts are subtle - you don't realise how great a lack of advertisement is until you've got that opportunity (there's the What's New tab, but that's optional and not in-your-face).

But yeah, there's no longer much in it, but it may last longer than the 360 yet, and I'd buy one just for Uncharted 3 (I'd buy an Xbox just for Reach, actually. in fact I've had to buy several.)

Edit: Basically, I've just realised to myself how much i hate corporate advertisement and childish additions ruining and distracting me from my gaming experience.

I have to say that there is literally only one single reason to choose one of the other if you must (I realize you didn't say that, for the record). If you are interested in exclusive titles for the system, then get it. As a previous poster said, "games are fun". That says it all. I had to choose at one point, so I like the PS3 exclusives over the competition, that is really it. Also, I'm 30 as of this year, when I was 26 I came to the conclusion that no one is too old for video games. There is no time limit on enjoying them. The most adult thing to consider is that you shouldn't stop doing something you enjoy if it doesn't harm anyone. The adult thing to do is the recognize that it's fine if you like to play video games, and regardless of what anyone has to say about it, it's fine that you do it.

I'd say the main benefit of a PS3 is that it's a console AND a BluRay player. (And what I've seen, cheaper or same price as a BluRay player along..)

After that it comes down to what games you'd like to play, what features you may prefer and with the PS3 you do get everything from out of the box. No need to worry and / or having to buy extra hardware, subscriptions or the like just to get full benefit of the console, it's all included. Therefore it usually is a little more expensive then a CrossBox... as a gaming console.

The online community and game titles are... well the CrossBox and PS3 are equal on that part, both have exclusive titles and the community varies, both have jerks and great people.

To Quote "soulsabr": "...find out what you want, compare the two systems, and then go from there. Have fun." Is the best advice to find out if the benefits of a PS3 is to your liking.

Personally I got a PS3 because:
- It suits me needs for games since... I can play games on it.
- It comes with BluRay (thumps up)
- Using it for showing pictures, watching films and listing to music I like the HUD from Sony and it looks great on the large telly in my opinion.
- It covers my needs great and a good investment.

Hope the post has giving you an insight in what to look at when considering getting a PS3.

My online experience is limited to Demon's Souls and that has been a positive experience. A Black Phantom who owned me even tried to give me a weapon as an apology.

Also the exclusives are pretty cool.

Rats, a proper reply would be a thread jack and that ain't cool. :( But, as an aside, flame wars don't start till you start acting like a jerk for no other reason than we disagree with you. Cheers!

What do you think of the online communities on both systems? I believe that the PS3 has a better flavor of people playing than xBox does and that makes all of the difference to me. I've not turned my xBox on since I beat Halo III some year or so ago and I still have three years left on my gold membership.

Other than games...

BluRay player
plays 3D movies and games
Movie streamer (PSN, Netflix, Hulu+, and that other movie streamer)
NFL Gameday
NHL Gamecenter
MLB TV
Web Browser

so its really a total media center that plays games and with the PSN you get a big library to old PSOne downloadables and NeoGeo games too.

LoL, I see a lot of comments about blu-ray, but the fact is, if you want you can get it for about $75 at Walmart. $300 blu-ray is just a bad idea.

I don't classify it as a console because it's more of an everything In one. Games, movies, music, tv, basic web functions. If you are going to get one make Sure you get the exclusive titals. There are also some good aps like vidzone(music) not to mention a nice collection of ps1 classics on the psn.
