My 40GB Ps3 died due to a disk reader malfunction and I need to get a whole new one. Between the two which would be the best choice?

I cant believe how big the "slim" actually, what it lacks in thickness it makes up for in girth

but yeah, theyre the same really

dude, i say go ps3 fat just because if you get one of the older models you can get one thats backwards compatible with ps2 games.
if any one wants to say that the research is not worth all that...

i just took all the piss out of that argument,

and please no flamers on the 360 vs ps3 backwards compatibility issue; we already know.

The Slim is thinner and shorter, same depth, more HD space, and it more readily available.

Probably be better to just repair it. It'll cost half the price of a new one and you'll keep all your save data. You will have to suffer a week or so without a PS3 though.

I'd say stick with the "fat" and try to repair it. Same thing happened to one of my friends PS3's and he sent it off to get repaired and it's still working fine now. That was like over two years ago now

Slim if you need space or to save money. Honestly I'd check forums and stuff on the PS sites to see if anyone with them has had any unforeseen problems so far

Tempting to stick with the repair now people are suggesting it- still the extra harddrive space and the fact I'd have two controller plus a free game is also tempting...
Mostly I'd say I'm concerned about longevity. I hear extended warranty can be expensive, but I need one that's reliable.

I will have my save games anyway, I have them on memory stick.
Plus I'll lose the god damn Oblivion glitch that seems utterly scarred to my ps3. If I get on a horse in Oblivion the game glitches out, and I've formatted it enough times to know it can't be fixed (happens with any Oblivion disk)

Go on Ebay, find a lightly used 60GB model, swap out the hard drive with a SATA 2.5 120GB, and then you're set. BACKWARDS COMPATABILITY FTW!!

What is the point of backwards compatibility? Chances are if you have a PS3 you own a PS2, thus you already have a system that will play your PS2 games. As for the question, for when I buy a PS3, I will probably get the slim, mainly because it is cheaper, and since it is newer any of the older PS3 problems will be worked out(most likely.)

Forget a 120 HDD go overkill and get a 400 for $80. You will never need space again!

Get a Phat for Linux, or a Slim because they "look better" (some people say they do, I like the look of the Phats better).

EDIT:

I'm pretty sure you can get 1 Terabyte hard drives nowadays.

(1 Terabyte is 1000 Gigabytes)
