Well, Double Fine has officially tossed Psychonauts 2 into the crowdfunding ring. 3,300,000 is their goal which is only part of the funding. Apparently the rest they're footing so we'll see how this turns out. I'm not linking this to promote it in any way, just letting people know its out there.

Well good luck to Double Fine getting it funded because there is no way in the world I would even consider crowdfunding a DF game. If the finished product is good, then I'll buy it because the first Psychonauts is an amazing game and I would love to play the sequel. But given their recent track record, I would not be prepared to help crowdfund its development.

Despite all the baggage that has come with crowdfunding recently, I hope this succeeds... It's probably naive, but Psychonauts has always been one of those titles that embodied the tragedy of taking risks in the game industry for me. One of the most creative and entertaining games I've played, and yet it was doomed to obscure cult status from the outset.

I didn't support the first game when it first came out, so maybe I can support the sequel. Catch some of that spark the original had, even if it doesn't end up perfectly.

Yeah right paying Double Fine up front for a promise of a game...that has worked so well before. Luckily I only fell for their "We are not a small developer we obviously finish our games" bullshit with Spacebase DF9. I wonder if people will still pay them large amounts of money after DF9 and Broken Age (which probably hit a lot more people than DF9 did).

If it gets finished and if it becomes a good game I will surely buy it but certainly not before that. I learned my lesson.

What!?! You FIEND! You dare tell me you aren't willing to part with a mere $500.00 of your cash at minimum for a company that has a tendency to overspend and gave us a budget that, even if we assume that the minimum they ask is 25% of what they're getting, won't be enough budget for the type of game they're going for? And you call yourself a gamer!

That was sarcasm, by the way. Yeah, I'm not sure why Schaffer thinks figs is a good idea here. I'd be interested in Psychonauts 2. I'm NOT willing to fork over $500 for it.
Umm... where did you get that $500 figure from?

According to the site linked, you only need to front up $33 to get a copy of the game. Or, y'know, buy it normally if/when it releases.

I fully understand not wanting to throw money at Double Fine, but I'm really puzzled by this "minimum $500" thing.

I wonder if the money they receive will only fund the first half of the game in actuality.

I know Double Fine have a bad record, but I couldn't help myself. I love Psychonauts too much, there's no way I'm not throwing a couple of pennies this game's way.

I want to fund this game, but I prefer if I pre-order it with the old fashion way...
The first game was a 10/10 for me.

This is not so much a "crowdfund the development of this game" opportunity as a superfluous gouging of the remaining faithful, seeing as the 3.3 mil. (much funny, Timmy) is going to cover only a fraction of the costs in any case. He's just going to blow his seven figure pre-tip on more "game industry" orgies, with DJ Fishstick on the decks.

Out of all the once respectable industry figures, the descent of Schafer into sub-basement-level douchiness has been the most spectacular, and there's every reason to believe he's only going to drill, baby, drill ever deeper. Even the freaking funding target is a mean-spirited dig at his former supporters. I'd rather fund a mule whose goal was to kick me than this buffoon.

The first psychonauts was pretty great, but it's been 10 years since the original game. At some point, a sequel looses the benefit of having the momentum of the first game, and we're far past that point. If you ask me, too-far-between sequels are rarely a good thing.

Forget the $500 figure, wherever it came from. I wouldn't give Double Fine $5.00, much less anything more. My 10-year old understands budgeting and spending limits better than that company does.

Yeah... this seems like a bad idea.

DoubleFine has been in decline for years, and considering their past crowdfunding attempts, giving them money is the very definition of a risky venture. And while I absolutely loved Psychonauts... its a 10 year old game that, while fun gameplay wise, is most notable for its soul. And recapturing the soul of a game is hard.

I will be passing on this, which I suppose is for the best anyway, considering I just blew my crowdfunding load on Battletech, a franchise I'm far more invested in then Psychonauts.

As a side note... people still haven't gotten their backer rewards for Broken Age? The game is two fucking years old. Holy shit.

After the messes that are SpaceBase DF9 and Broken age, the mere thought of giving Tim "Sock Puppet" Schafer money repulses me.

$500 comes from what's required if you want to be an 'investor' rather than a backer. I glanced over the investor system, and it's pretty much total garbage. You pay in sets of $500, and the payback rate, based on the gross sales, is such that you break even if Psychonauts 2 sales as well as Psychonauts 1. Anything below that and you lose out money and don't even get backer rewards by the looks of things. The investor agreement also strips you of your ability to pull funding, and as near as anyone can tell, you don't really get much more legal standing in regards to the ability to demand success than regular backers.

You're better off taking that $500 and just doing reward tiers that interest you than being an "investor" with their system.

Crowdsourcing is a scam, buuuuuuuuuttt... Psychonauts, man. it was like the swan song of originality before games became so interchangable you could swap out one batman game for another while the player was in the bathroom and they wouldn't notice any differences.

I'd still rather see Eternal Darkness 2, but we need to wait another few millenia for the runes to be drawn, cities built, and planets align for it to happen. but since Pluto got kicked out of that club since the first game the whole alignment thing should be a bit easier.
