Hey eveyone,

Just writing with a question about DX:HR's "Pacifist" achievement. I've heard conflicting reports about whom you can kill and still get the 100 points.

According to the in-game description, only bosses don't count as kills. The tvtropes entry on the game claims that it's OK for the pre-augmented Adam to kill some spec ops guys in the game's first action sequence, but an IGN vid that I saw yesterday contradicted this.

As for me, I hadn't been planning on doing a non-lethal run, but it's just how I wound up playing the game. (I did, however, cap a couple of mercs in the first segment).

Grateful to anyone who can shed light.

All I can offer is that it is completely possible to get through the pre-augmented stages without killing anyone.

Yeah, I would've guessed that was the case. As I said, I hadn't originally planned on going non-lethal. After shooting a few guys in the opening sequence though, I found that I didn't like the feel of gunplay in the game and decided to go the stun/stealth route. I'm enjoying it so far.

Although it seems obvious, anyone going for a pacifist run should be careful of doing any non-lethal take downs anywhere near any sort of environmental hazard. Bastards have a terrible habits of landing exactly in the last place you want them to - off the edge of a roof, into the water, into arcing electricity, etc.

My only attempt at a pacifist run died when I had to EMP grenade a large bot that had me pinned down and while it was overloading some jerk ran over to it to catch an explosion in the face. As a result I then cleared the level of every living being out of spite.

Gunplay is so much better once you get a silencer. If you plan on doing a non-pacifist play through later.

10mm w/ silencer, laser, and every upgrade known to man = heaven for stealth.

EDIT: Also, does anyone know if you can hack box guards? I haven't tried, I've usually just avoided them at all cost.

I second this.

As soon as I got the silenced, armor penetrating, laser sighted 10mm pistol, I was running around maps, stealthing it up and popping guys in the head with their mates none the wiser.

Exactly what I did, although it becomes a tad more difficult when enemies start wearing helmets and no one's dropping pistol clips anymore. Then you use a machine pistol! :D Which is awesome, at least after you go through the whole upgrade process again.

The homing flechette system for the machine pistol and combat rifle is good fun. Once you've got a lock there's no need to pop out from cover.

Pity it's not much use against heavily armoured opponents. :\

Also, is it just me or is the 'special add on' for the shotgun, the burst system, just really, really shit?

If you use the armor piercing mod, and make sure to constantly attach damage upgrades to the 10mm, then you should still be killing heavies with one headshot, even at the end of the game. The only problem with the 10mm is that ammo becomes harder and harder to find for it, as you pointed out.

For the shotgun, it shines when you have people advancing towards you and you have to minimise the amount of time you stand out of cover. Also works near the end of the game, though you're given one just before it's useful.

The fully upgraded 10mm pistol is the most OP shit imaginable, if there was more ammo I could happily use it the whole game, minus the bosses.

Also: get a laser sighted combat rifle with the target thingy for one of the later bosses, it helps so much.

I'm just doing the certain annoying defend/I hate you box guards part and I'm pretty certain the box guard shot an explosive barrel and killed a trooper.. Will this affect my pacifist?

I restarted it becuase it said on IGN that you couldn't kill those guys in the start sequence. I know I know! IGN... but that was the only reference I could find to it. That could be wrong of course.

I'm finding it okay getting through the game so far on give me Deus Ex without killing anyone. I actually assume it's easier playing stealthily as everyone one shots you rofl. :)

WARNING SOME SPOILERS

I was running a perfect kill free campaign til that Malik section came up, but silly me I forgot to stock up on tranq ammo and I just wasn't going to take the cowardly route and sneak away.

To be safe, I wouldn't kill ANYONE, in any way, shape, or form. I've heard that you can't kill the mercs at the beginning--which is annoying, as I wanted them dead for what they did. So far, I've haven't killed anyone (except the first and second boss) and it's been trying at some parts, but doable.

Just wait until your second visit to China. I think I had to reload about 40 times for one part...

But I finally pulled it off.

That reminds me...I saw your post in my thread.
About saving Malik while staying Pacifist
Yeah, it took me forever, but I finally did it. I checked all the bodies and they all had Z's. If you need tips on it, PM me. It's hard as hell to do.

Make sure that your non lethal strikes don't result in someone accidently dying due to falling into something, BE VERY CAREFUL if you EVER see an explosive tank or gas canister near anything as they all kill and PEP's can detonate those like in the last level.

Also, be very careful in the special helicopter save mission because well if you're not the robot explosion will kill someone.

USE EMP's against robots.
