Anyone who has seen the ads for Quantum Theory acting as a precursor for most of the videos on this site would surely know about Quantum Theory by now. I had the benefit of downloading the Demo from XBox Live before I'd even heard of the game and went into it with a blank slate and an unbiased opinion.
And hated it.
The concept of the game is actually quite good from a storyline aspect, until you play the game. The idea that the building you've entered is a living entity with the enemies acting as white blood cells attempting to purge the infection (you) would be quite gripping, provided there is original gameplay. Unfortunately, original gameplay is what this game lacks. This game is a Gears of War rip off of the worst kind. Every part of it.
The cover system is an exact clone as are the weapons (albeit, without the chainsaw bayonet) and they've even added the Roadie-run that stopped being original by the time Gears 2 was released.
Granted, this game isn't the first to rip off G.o.W, but the lack of originality doesn't stop there. Graphics, level and character design are all Devil May Cry 3 & 4 copies and there's even an attempt to add Devil May Cry cutscenes for an enemy take-down or whenever you hurl your scantily-clad, female, blade-wielding companion at the larger foes for a ranged attack. The biggest problem with this is that the cutscene plays EVERY time you get a headshot or throw your female compatriot, which gets VERY old VERY fast, especially when you're taking on three large foes and it takes 3-4 Girl Hurls to take one of them down. While trying to find time to fire from cover at the smaller foes surrounding them. Which you can't do during a cutscene.
If this game had been developed by Capcom or Epic Games, they could be forgiven, because they're using their own trademark game design (at which point they would also be called a one-trick pony), but as it stands, this game represents some sort of Next-Gen Crossover Fan-Fic. By a fifteen year old girl.
The purpose of a free downloadable game demo is to sell the game that it's demonstrating and give the gamer a reason to buy. The effect of the QT demo, however, has the opposite intended effect. It has given me EVERY reason NOT to buy it and delete it from my Hard Drive after a single play through.
If Yahtzee ever reviews this game for ZP, I fear it will be little more than a scream of frustration into his mic for 5 solid minutes, pausing only for breath.
And hated it.
