When did this phrase start? I may have been out of the loop. I get what it means; I've heard it in Louis C.K. standup, but do people just say that to you whenever you complain about anything related to gaming? I get gaming's a luxury, but yes--I wasn't made into a child soldier and my parents weren't raped in front of me--but that means I can't complain about something game-related?

About seveteen years ago [http://knowyourmeme.com/memes/first-world-problems]; no; you can, just make sure it's a solid argument first (I suggest second year logic courses at your local college or university).

Anything else? :)

How does someone pointing out that your gaming problems are First World Problems prevent you from complaining, anyway? Most of your problems are first world problems - and YOUR situation won't get better if you just accept them as status quo.

First world problems are still problems.

They're just not serious problems by the standard of the third world.

Saying "first world problems" is just a way of riffing on someone's rant and reminding everyone that this really isn't an issue of life and death. It's not EXACTLY invalidation of your issues. But we tend to engage in a little cheerful hyperbole round these parts when things don't break our way, so sometimes it's good to keep shit in perspective.

Well... yeah, you can complain, who's stopping you? besides, if you don't end up whinning, then there's no harm to it.

Even though first world problems are rather silly, they're still problems. Besides I find it funny when people complain about silly little stuff like false advertisings in all-you-can-eat restaurants http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/18.375340-A-Simpsons-Situation-Has-Become-Reality when people down here have to deal with stuff like not finding food on supermarkets along with the goverment leaving food to rot on containers http://www.latinbusinesschronicle.com/app/article.aspx?id=4264

I understand what you've all said, but frankly we're all dealing with first world issues. This is of course not a matter of life and death, but when have any of us dealt with such issues? And to be more to the point--it's a pointless argument to begin with; to be accussed of being a first-world whiner when you're complaining about a first-world issue on a first-world website is completely full of it. (I live in Chicago) If I went to the Nato Summit and whined about the Diablo 3 servers, then yes--I'd be wrong. But I haven't done that. To say someone's merely complaining about first world problems on a website dedicated to gaming is insane.

Generally speaking, people in this thread have stated that, yes, it's fine to complain about First World Problems.

As for when have any of us had to deal with life and death issues? I've been homeless, and I'm a cancer survivor. :p

Sorry, nevermind. Congrats on surviving. I guess I was wrong.

Hey, no need to apologize - you couldn't have known what people have gone through, and given that this is an entertainment site, the first-world problems are the status quo.

And thanks.

Glad to hear back from you. I felt like a dick. My only point was that it's not wrong to complain about a game. No matter how trivial it might seem, some people take work off or cancel engagements to play these games. I just think we deserve the right to whine a bit when a server goes down and we can't play single player. Anyway, thanks for putting things into perspective for me.

No problem. Everyone has some kind of hardship, and even the first world ones can be difficult - a car breaking down can be quite trying, even if it doesn't put you out that much.

And of course you complain about things like Diablo 3's servers being down.

It is perfectly acceptable to be upset about things you enjoy - that is the only way that situations can ever improve.
