Did you guys ever have to sell candy bars as a school function thing, and you got prizes depending on how much you sold?

I was just thinking about it and realized that in three different states (Florida, California, and Oregon), they all had that. So I was wondering if it was just an American thing or what.

...I'd always end up eating all the candy myself and getting my grandparents to pay for it.

Yeah we had that at my school in Australia. I think we had to sell Freddo Frogs which are chocolates in the shape of a frog.

Yup, I had chocolate sale fundraisers in my primary school and whoever sold the most won a special prize. There were also prizes for 2nd, 3rd and a winner from a lucky draw. This is New Zealand by the way.

That's pretty common in Canada too, though many schools are now branching out a little just because everyone does the expensive candy bar and/or chocolate covered almond thing now a days.

Back when I was a kid I can remember my school going with this holiday gift catalog once. I actually made more sales from that than I ever did from chocolate.

I know the band kids did it to help pay for their trips, but the rest of my school never did. This is a Canada high school that I'm talking about.

Yes but we didn't get any prizes
The funding was mostly for events which they'd say was our reward anyway.
Australia by the way, NSW to be specific.

Another Canadian here. From grades 4-6 my school had us sell chocolate bars too. Only the top 3 or so sellers got prizes though.

EDIT: Specifically, we sold these

...every year. Which probably explains why I can't stand them today.

That was always the best at school. People just roaming around with those little boxes of one dollar Caramel Koalas and Freddo Frogs.

Most schools here in the UK stopped selling fizzy drinks and candy bars a few years ago. A TV show called "School Dinners" starring a celebrity chef named Jamie Oliver took an in-depth look into what children eat at school and the facts were quite shocking and caused a bit of an uproar in British media.

I work at a secondary school (high school in the US?) and thanks to that celebrity chef I can no longer buy cans of coke or chocolate bars at work :-( Certainly there are none sold by students (it's actually against the rules for them to bring outside food in to school anyway), even illicitly, at least as far as I'm aware.

Wha?

Nope... never sold candy or anything else on behalf of my school. Never heard of such a thing happening either.

If funding was ever needed for special events then those attending were just asked to straight up pay for them, although the school had a decent budget to help out as well.

I don't remember prizes... We used to get a box and I'd get my mum to buy them all for me. It was $20 for a box which was a really good deal.

UK. And nope. Although my friend does buy doughnuts, cookies, cans of coke etc. from a nearby shop to sell at school. He makes a nice profit, and the teachers don't mind.

UK man over here, can't recall doing anything like that in school. Which I'm so very, very grateful for.
In fact, I don't really understand why some foreign schools do this. Schools are for learning. Things like selling stuff as a school function seems like a gigantic waste of time for all involved.

We did in Sweden but there weren't any prices and we just sold these really large boxes of cookies that no one bought, they were just too big and too expensive.

Well, here in the West Midlands (It's in the Uk, in... well, the west half of the middle.) I've never heard of people selling chocolate for prizes. I've seen quite a few home-baked (Or store-brought, if the sellers were a bit lazy) cakes being sold and won as part of fates, and just about anything charity-based. It's like a go-to thing: Money for aids research? Bake sale! Money for breast cancer research? Bake sale! Money for anything we need money for? Bake sale!

So yeah, cakes are about a lot. I don't think I've seen any prizes for the best-sellers, though, other then feelings of accomplishment and goodwill. I don't think we were ever forced, either; it was strictly a "If you want to do it, do it, if not, not" thing.
