I'm considering getting my mom an Amazon Fire Stick for her birthday, and I have a question. Do I need an Amazon Prime subscription to use non-Amazon Prime video services on the stick? (like how you need Xbox LivevGold to use any of those apps last I checked), or is this a stupid question?

See and here I was hoping this was a thread about Amazon-made flamethrowers.

Now I'm disappointed. =/

I had to look up "Amazon Fire Stick", sounded like an exotic weapon in "Xena, Warrior Princess" (which surely would have made a thoughtful gift for your mom). And in so doing, I came across the Amazon UK site, which states this:

"Fire TV Stick connects your HDTV to a world of online entertainment. Whether you're a Prime member or not, enjoy a huge selection of movies and TV episodes, voice search that actually works, and exclusive features such as ASAP. Fire TV Stick is an easy way to enjoy Netflix, Amazon Video, BBC iPlayer, low-cost movie rentals, live and on-demand sports, music, photos, games and more."

(Bolding of the relevant part by me.)

Anyway, it seems to indicate you in fact don't need a Prime subscription for non-Amazon services, just whatever subscriptions/apps are relevant for what you want to use.

Good, thanks for the info.

I can't address the question directly because I do have prime membership, but I would say that I quite like the Firestick for what it offers (I use it on an upstairs TV, only connection is the Firestick, never had any issues).

Your question has been answered by others, but as an addition you don't need a Gold subscription to access the apps on Xbox consoles any longer. Microsoft removed the requirement a good while ago now.
