Question for Gamestop Employees

Are you trained to "talk up" a game that a customer has brought to the counter for purchase? I've lost count of the number of times that I've pulled a box off the shelf, handed it to a GA, and then been assaulted with gushing praise for the title.
If Gamestop is training its employees to do this, does anyone know why? I understand that some employees/companies go with the hard sell but why do that when the customer has clearly made up his mind to buy the product and is standing there with cash in hand?
Maybe I just have the best taste in games ever...

Edit: Seems that the original post needs more explanation because, at the moment, the majority of the responses indicate that I'm coming across as an asshole. When I say "I've lost count" and "assaulted with gushing praise", I mean that the impromptu praise of the game is 1. empty - in that it could apply to another other title and 2. over-the-top in that such high praise is not deserved and, therefore, seems to be a rehearsed tactic. Case in point: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Bible_Game. I bought this as a joke gift for my fiance`. The only way in which it could be considered "good" is in how laughably horrible it is... and only then, it's probably best (only) enjoyed with a group of drunken heathens (speaking from experience). However, when I was at the cash register, the clerk gave the same glowing recommendation that I've heard applied to several other titles in almost exactly the same way. It's the ubiquity (not just one employee), frequency, degree, lack of any negative criticism, and the fact that all of that is applied to some really obscure crap that makes me narrow my eyes and call "conspiracy."

How bout maybe they really like game and hope to join you in a discussion about it's goodness?..maybe they're trying to be friendly and make a repeat customer out of you? If you don't like them doing that then be polite and ask nicely for them to calm down.

What this man said.

Some of my favorite people to talk to about games(Besides you guys!) are the employees at my local Game Stop.

I want to know why they give so fucking little money for a game that still had the plastic wrapper on it.

The guys at my gamestop are pretty honest, in fact a lot of the time we talk about bad games, or games that are old and no longer being sold. The only time they ever did this with me the way you're talking about it chrono trigger, and it was clear that that was his favorite game.

Perhaps they just like games?

I remember talking to a guy for about an hour about games. It was fun.

Seeing as I used to work at a gamestop, I shall answer your question.

No, we did not "Train" to be used car salesmen. What we WERE told, is to give off the image of being a fellow gamer. Be their brothers, their homies, their best friends. So naturally we talk about games. You're going to have to be just a little bit more specific about what constitutes "Gushing", but I'm pretty sure the employee you met at the time just loved that game and was talking about it.

I used to do something similar at my old job (selling educational supplies and board games) -- if someone was buying a game I really enjoyed or heard good things about, I'd try to be friendly and make a little conversation so we weren't just standing around in awkward silence through the transaction.

(I've warned people away from things, too -- not often, but once in a while, if I really thought someone was making a mistake.)

Yes, they tell you to act as friends, and when we let our guards down, you smack us in the head and drag us into the backroom where you absorb our life force.

I'm on to you...

Of course they're trained to do that, if they didnt then they wouldnt sell games and hence wouldnt make money. Duh. It's like asking if car salesmen are trained to talk up the cars on their lot.

"Sir, he knows. Yes sir."

"Excuse me, would you mind coming with me for just a moment?"

As a current employee, I just tell it like it is. If I know a game is crap, I don't hesitate to inform. Have I talked up a person? Yes. Have I annoyed someone before by doing so? Yes. He was a staff sergeant in the Marines, and he kindly yet firmly said "Sir, shut up. I'm buying it, but shhh."
My fellow employees do the same. We all game regularly. Hell, my friend and I are currently competing for trophies with the store down the street. We know our stuff. We use this knowledge to help. I've met annoying GS employees before, but trust me, most of us are just fellow gamers working in a store that sells games. We're in our "Nerdery".
Rarely do we have advanced gamers in my store, and those that do come in we know personally already. While our company likes us to 'play friend', everyone I know does it to be polite. You as a consumer come in to buy games or game related items. Not everyone educates themselves beforehand, so they ask questions, and we answer them as best we can. For the most part though, people come in, buy crap on the Wii, and leave with $200 of shit in a bag, only to try to return it later.

As for gushing, yes. I know several employees that do that. And it's always a game we really really love....

FYI on trades : Uh...Gamestop does that. Corporate does these things, and we have no say.

Some gamestop employees actually like to play games. So I'm assuming they might talk about it like any of us human beings might *that being sarcasm/joking etc*

I worked for gamestop, people grabbed a game I'd give my 2 cents just for the heck of it.

Well maybe their like me and just find whats good about the game. Then they enjoy it. I actually only really hate one game and thats MW2. every thing else I have found a lot of joy from and actually didn't hate it after 2 seconds of game play. In fact I still play halo. Anyways back on topic, I have actually had a gamestop employ talk me out of buying a few games because he said that a buyer like me (he has worked there for a long time) would prolly hate it, or he did.

I like the guys at my Gamestop, I've been going there so long most of them know me and the manager actualy stops people from IDing me most the time. but OT I have had them tell me not to get a few games because they knew I wouldn't like it or because it was just bad, so I dont think they are trained for it and they are just being friendly.

I should really brush up on mine, Pngy isn't something to be proud of. It is a nice Avatar though.

I would say that they may actually like talking about games, maybe that's why they got a job at a Game Store?
