Question for Movie Bob watchers

So maybe it's just me, and I"m just noticing it because it happens to me, but I tend to watch his reviews AFTER already seeing the movie, and from most of the comments I've read on the individual reviews seem to be most of the same thing.
Most of the comments seem to be written by people who have already seen the movie.

So my question is, how much do you use the reviews as a guide, or do you watch them only after seeing the movie?

I usually don't see a movie until a few weeks after a movie opens, because I prefer near-empty theaters (I dislike crowds), plus if it's just me and my friends can MST3K the hell out of a movie without complaints.

Back on topic, I usually end up watching the reviews first, just because of timing.

(also, was I the only one who thought this thread would be some moviebob hate thread?)

I watch the reviews first so me and my friends can bet on what movie bob says about the film.

I watch reviews because I have nothing else to do, I don't listen to reviews because it all comes down to what each person likes, and it seems I like many movies that Movie Bob doesn't.

I really don't agree with Movie Bob's tastes, but his perspective always amuses me. I watch his reviews when they come out, then if I see the movie I'll watch it again to see how his opinion matches up with mine.

I use his revieuws to decide what movies to buy/download after they've been released on home media.

But I mostly watch the videos for entertainment.

Myself, I tend to watch the review first, then at somepoint check out films which he reccommends (for example, I didn't watch Scott Pilgrim until I saw the DVD for £9 in Tesco). I tend not to go to see films at the cinema (chiefly because one, nearest cinema is about 2.5 miles away and I'd have to atleast walk back, even if i could get the bus to it, and two, I have virtually no-one to go with and I really don't want to be that slightly creepy loner guy)

I generally watch them before the film comes out, I do tend to use him as a guideline cause I find I agree often with his views. Cases in point: Watchmen, Scott Pilgrim, Knight and Day.

I'm beginning to wonder if he's getting the traffic; this was brought on by the recent news that the user group for $2.50 Reviews overtook the ETTM usergroup...

On another note, anyone else find it amusing that his review of The Expendables is STILL getting comments he doesn't read complaining about his review?

That kinda makes sense, since all anyone can do before watching a movie is speculate. After seeing a movie most people have an opinion on it and talk about how their opinions are the same or different from the reviewers.

OT: I usually watch Movie Bob's stuff, and even enjoy a lot of the geek culture pieces, but sometimes he comes off as pretentious [see Scre4m review]

I watch him on rare occasion. But I rarely ever see the targeted movie. Most films nowadays just don't interest me.

Generally out of the fact that I've usually go not funds at all to go and spend on a trip to the movies, I'll watch Escape To The Movies to help sway my choice when I ultimately do have an opportunity to see something. Although, I like to watch his stuff anyway. I enjoy how he sometimes digs up something interesting he noticed in the film he watched, sometimes explaining it too. Sadly, I have ended up watching films he's given a poor review of because of differing reasons: Most recently, the Transformer's new thing.

I don't use movie critics to determine if I see a movie or not. I go see the movie, I read reviews to remind me why I don't read reviews.

To be honest I never understood the point of reviews. People should be able to form their own opinion of whether they like or dislike a movie or game or whatever. At best reviewers are glorified spoiler delivery systems, at worse they serve a "purpose" so superfluous it boarders on criminal that they get paid for doing so.

In a perfect world they'd just tell you what happened in a movie with the fewest spoilers possible, maybe post some links to other films that are similar in case you like the description. And now that we have Wikipedia and IMDB to do that, and do it with less 'tude, well...I really don't see the point.

An aside...

I'm not a huge Bob Chipman fan, actually--I find many of his views archaic and almost deliberately backwards-thinking, especially in his guise as the Game Over-thinker (a.k.a. "OMG U GAIS MARIO IS AWSUM!!1!"). He seems openly dismissive of almost everything I enjoy, belittles people he thinks are beneath him, and judges people based purely on what movies they like or what games they play. Or am I the only one who found his repeated assertion, HIS COMPLETELY GENUINE ASSERTION before anyone claims he was "joking", that everyone who plays multiplayer on XBL is a hoodlum? Or that anyone who enjoyed the Transformers trilogy was a retard who needed to be prevented from voting (yes he says that) because they're dangerous? Don' even get me started on how ridiculous and myopic his views on FPS games are. I frankly have no problem with people disagreeing with me, I do, however, have problems with people who think they're better than someone based on something as arbitrary as game or movie preferences, and who are openly contemptuous of people because they don't share his. That's not elitism, that's asinine, and frankly it betrays just how ignorant, impotent and immature he really is.

That and he tends to fetishize his own childhood in a way that strikes me as either:

A--he's lying.

B--he's almost certainly not remembering it right.

I mean, I had an awesome childhood, with loving parents and a grandmother (rest her soul) that spoiled me, but I don't pretend that life began and ended during the 5th-10th years of my life. Nostalgia is fine but sweet Jesus...

Anyway, I know I just pissed off all the MovieBob fans, but whatever. I'm not going to stifle my opinion just to keep from stepping on toes. Flame if you must but at least try to do so in a constructive matter, maybe in the form of a rebuttal even.

One thing you have to understand:
Moviebob is a fanboy (not that he's ever tried to hide it) and his reviews are often biased as fuck. I watch them more for entertainment than guide.

He's a critic, not a reviewer. I don't base my movie choices on whether or not he likes a movie. I watch Movie Bob to get some different views on new movies in general.

I usually wait for some reviewers that seem to have similar tastes as mine, because more often than not, I will end up agreeing with what they say is crap and what they say is good.

I usually have similar tastes as bob, but there are times when I dont really need to know his thoughts to know that movies like TF3 are shit.

How is the guy who's going alone "creepy"? If I'm going to see a movie I want to see I don't want any of my buddies sitting there trying to whisper something to me. I want to fucking watch the movie!

This is also why I never, ever watched movies until I got a PS2 because whoever was in the living room would discuss something completely unrelated to the movie the entire time it was on.
Going to the cinema, like eating out, is usually a group activity. Most people don't want to be the sad lonely guy at the restaurant whose only company is his cheeseburger. I hate it when people talk in the theater, too. Especially people I'm there with, embarrassing and annoying.

Anyway, I wasn't particularly interested in the latest X-Men movie until I saw the review on it. Glad I went.
