Question of the Day, September 15, 2010

The Smithsonian Art Museum is hosting its very own alternate reality game [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/103466-Alternate-Reality-Game-Turns-Museum-Into-Capture-the-Flag-RPG], pitting museum-goers against one another as the fictional Staves or Knaves. To hear more about the story, you'll have to visit the museum, but it's likely to do with protecting humanity's precious and rare works of art. Which famous work of art would you save from destruction?

I chose Guernica, I would have named it if it wasn't on the list. It was nice to see that it was an option to vote on.

I'd have to go for Michelangelo's David. It's a classic work of art for a number of reasons. Plus I'm still imature enough to look at it and think "Hur hur... he's naked!"

The Scream. Beyond a shadow of a doubt, The Scream.

It's the most fun to parody, too!

The Sistine Chapel. It's a magnificent piece of art.

In my other hand I'd take Munch's Scream.

Starry Night is one of my favourite paintings of all time.
If I had to choose something else I would pick Relativity by M.C. Escher.

save as in put into a virtual reality reality?

Well most of those can be saved pretty easily and are fairly well looked after now but the roof of the Sistine chapel is something that has to be seen to be appreciated .

It's size means it can't really be moved and if (when) something happens to the building then it'll be gone and the fact it's a roof would make it pretty awkward to maintain.

Besides how cool would it be to use alternate reality to look up and see the chapels roof as though it were really there any-time you wanted, or flick it down to the floor or a wall to look at details. Very cool that's how much.

It's not technically a work of 'art' in the strictest sense of the word, but I'd go with the Bayeux Tapestry. It has been described as the first example of narrative art in existence, and it is a beautifully crafted graphical chronicle of one of the most influencial periods of British European history.

The School of Athens by Raphael

The sheer amount of detail and hidden meaning is amazing.

I chose Guernica, it is a warning and a reminder of the horrors of war. While the other works are beautiful and skillful, only Guernica carries an angry shocking message that is still poignant today.

Can I just let them all be destroyed? No.

Okay, I'll save Scream then. I guess I like it better than the others.

Michelangelo's David

It shows us that it's okay for such an Adonis to have a small penis.
