I'm guessing by influence a lot of the younger audience here seems to be forgetting that Final Fantasy was the first RPG(the first one for NES) to define the genre and still adds flavor as a continuing series. Even if people hate the series it defined what an RPG is in its release in 1987 and a lot of games use/rip off its elements its clearly had the most impact on the genre and is older then anything else listed that actually is an RPG(which zelda isn't though the second one is debatable but Final Fantasy still came out first). So Final Fantasy should by far be the winning game on this poll.

Why's Legend of Zelda up there?

Edit: Out of those choices, I'd say Final Fantasy. I'd also like to add Pokemon, for the use of an open world instead of a world map.

*Disclaimer...console/handheld gamer here. If the PC had an open-world RPG before Pokemon, I probably never played it.

Easy question. Final Fantasy.
Also, my opinion is completely biased since I'm a fanboy.

Ultima, Baldurs Gate, Fallout, Planescape all of these are classic rpg's, Dragon Age is barely a year old it's hard to tell how it will influence future rpg's if at all it should'nt have been included imo..besides Mass Effect will probably influence far more rpg's since even Dragon age uses some of the stuff that game came up with.

The thing I especially don't like about people in general is that whenever this sort of question is posed people usually just vote for their favorite rather than what actually might be a legitimate answer.

I voted Final Fantasy even though I've never completed one farther than the prologue.

no ultima? no zork tho not a traditional rpg in the sense it was text adventure zork had long reaching influence on many rpgs throughout the years.

ultima game were insanely hard also, but was one of the first and pretty long running rpgs that lead the way for final fantasy and others.

Over the course of RPG history, I'd say Zelda has been the biggest influence. Final Fantasy VII was and most likely always will be my favorite game of all time, but Zelda is always there and always being a big influence in the RPG world.

Incredibly arbitrary items that you'll only use in one dungeon then one boss fight and then for some messing around? Check.
Dungeons in places that they really just shouldn't be in (underwater, a living organism, and in general not just the basement of a castle)? Check
Somewhat androgynous protagonist whose name is whatever the hell you like, most likely including a cuss? Check
Only the weirdest of weird sidequests? Check
Themes that would go far, far over the heads of the audience the ESRB approved it for? Check
Logic in puzzles that only an insane man could figure out? Check

So really, Zelda has everything an RPG needs to be called such. Plus although the FF series can boast all of those on their list, Zelda's just freakin' Zelda!

Where the hell are Wizardry, Fallout, Morrowind/Daggerfall, original King's Bounty, Baldur's Gate or even Knights Of The Old Republic?

Oblivion is a successor to Morrowind with nothing particularly new except for visuals, so how can we talk about Oblivion influence here?

How the hell could have Dragon Age influenced something, when it was released less than a year ago? And even with that in mind, DA is a classic RPG to a bone.

Final Fantasy is an RPG series?! Is this planet somehow different from the Earth?

Oh, and Zelda really isn't an RPG - where's role playing in it? It's an action-adventure in modern terms, and it's clearly influenced the whole genre, only it wasn't an RPG.
This post in its entirety. Completely bogus question - No Might & Magic, no Ultima, no Realms of Arkania or Deus Ex. Not even Dungeon Master!

No D&D option?
I voted final fantasy.
Also: I wouldn't vote this, but I'm sure many would: No KOTOR?

No Ultima, no Might & Magic. Zelda is less of an RPG than Diablo. Overall you've included only titles with recent sequlas. Of the bunch I would have to pick NWN as it is the only one that acually supports Roleplaying. But would still have to pick other as non of them have made a significan impact beyond their company's franchises.

I have to say Final Fantasy. However, I believe there was a game before Final Fantasy came out on another (old) system. I can't really remember the exact name of it, but I think this game had to do with the word, "Dungeon" or "Master" or the like--but ignore that if you have no idea what I'm talking about.

But yes Final Fantasy has established the FF genere, but I have to sadly say I'm pretty much done with the series. Only because of story. It seems to lack any other orginal cocepts of ideas. It's plot is always usually the same ever since FF7--and mind you I'm a big fan of FF7--but just because I'm a big of FF7 doesn't mean I want the same recepie over and over again. FF9 did real good on this, and perhaps I'd have to say maybe even 10--but then it just went down from there.

Okay, I'll stop now. Forgive my ramblings, Sorry for boring ya.

EDIT: I would say D&D too, but I'm guessing(<---note the key word guessing) this poll partains to "video games RPGs". Then again I could be wrong.
