Bad poll is bad.

Other - the Ultima series.
Day/nite cycles, NPCs having time dependent tasks, completely open worlds, multiple (but mostly bad) endings etc..
Also it was great fun.
I like people saying what I was going to without me having to type it all out. Also special mention to the Ultima Underworld games and the Wizardry series.

I wish I could say Planescape: Torment but that wasn't influential in the slightest apart with the players like me. It can just comfortably sit atop my list of favouritist games ever.

I feel so old now.

the poll is broken because "RPG" is divided in "western" and "eastern" RPG´s, for Eastern, Final Fantasy was the obvious choice, for Western its Ultima

and I certainly wouldnt think of comparing Final Fantasy against Ultima wich was one of the most iconic games because it translated "P&P" RPG´s into a PC really well, and created a new genre in its own.

and seriously... Zelda?? its more adventure than RPG... but well, to each its own.

Go back to the PS1 for a second. Anyone remember one of the greatest games of all time? Legend of Dragoon.
It basically set the precedent for any and all games to come after it in rpg. It was a revolutionary game, even graphics wise(at that time).

Dungeons and Dragons. Most videogame RPGs have stats that are incredibly similar.

But, what about Dragon Warrior/Quest. It probably influenced Final Fantasy series, as it came out before FFI. I am glad they got rid of the stupid navigate a menu to walk up and down stairs though.

Well first of all, Zelda isn't an RPG at all. These choices suck. Baldur's Gate, Diablo, Ultima Online, Fallout etc are all far more influential.

My votes going to Baldur's Gate.
This could have sprung from my brain. My vote goes to Baldur's Gate.

Baldurs gate, fallout, diablo...none of these existed before final fantasy.

And besides, this is not a popularity contest, this is a history lesson.

FF hasn't influenced the genre, unless you're talking about its own sequels or JRPGS, which are less 'influenced' and more just 'carbon-copied.'

If you want to call that influence, fair enough. But I don't like using the word unless the influence has been for the better, for the advancement of the genre (Before people get pedantic, I know this isn't strictly what the word means, but being 'influential' is usually taken as positive). Even FF fans would struggle to argue that the series' own sequels have achieved much in the way of groundbreaking advancement since FF7, let alone raising the bar for the entire genre.

I'd say Oblivion I suppose. Though really Morrowind started the process, Oblivion just polished it. And there are many games that influenced Elder Scrolls too, though they aren't listed in the poll.

Quite a narrow poll for such a broad subject, really. Kinda forces people to choose FF.

Of course the majority of people picked Final Fantasy and granted, it was the first real JRPG to kick off in the west, but in terms of the genre I chose Dragon Quest.

In the West it hasn't been as popular it is in Japan, but the game series was the first to use table-based combat and customisable RPG characters (even if by "customisable" they meant "You can pick the name! -_-) something which Square Enix (formerly Squaresoft of course) then used when creating the series Final Fantasy.

In short, Final Fantasy wouldn't exist without Dragon Quest. Q.E.D, Dragon Quest is more influencial.
