Let's take a step back and look at ourselves. We've been taking our opinions and turning them into our coat of arms.
The question is, why can't we let people have their opinions without having a crying fit about them being different from ours?

I've personally been trying with people i meet, and friends and stuff, to be more open to accepting our differances. If me and a friend are arguing over Console vs. PC, i'll simply represent my view, and allow him to present his. then accept our disagreement. It makes for a much better world for people not to run around trying to convert people to their oppinion, because that's all that it is, an Opinion.

I agree with OP, let us all get along!

My experiences as a systems administrator have taught me two things:

* People are stupid, and think that because they can install Word they know how to fix their own computers.
* Everyone hates the fact that I am always right. Especially the beancounters (accountants).

But from someone in a corporate environment I have to say the concept of everyone getting along has been taken a little too far. As resident B.O.F.H. I know I am the only person in this entire company who is willing to stand up and say "screw you" to a CEO or someone if they have a stupid idea. Maybe not quite in those words of course, but the point remains. Everyone spends so much time trying to make everyone else feel good and "get along" that we end up dissolving into a sprawling mass of stupid ideas that are detrimental to the whole of the company.

This doesn't just occur at this company but rather at every one I have been at. I'm happy to listen to other ideas, as people are to mine, and even action a system providing it has been researched and the points are valid. Arguments such as Console vs. PC *nods at tagMaverick* are IMHO a stupid argument to have as people will always have opinions that suit them best.

In a corporate environment, if someone's opinion differs from mine then the odds are that is because they're in a different position to me and have, honestly, no idea what is going on. This sounds amazingly stuck up but as a SysAdmin I have the entire companies infrastructure in mind, when these people are only thinking of their department. Out in the rest of the world, any opinion is valid so long as it is not pushed onto me (can't stand Jehovah Witness' for example). Topical discussions with valid points and reasoning's are always enjoyable.

For the record: I'm referred to as a Grade A+ Bastard by my closest friends, and I'm a sociopath.

Well, I've found that around here at The Escapist everybody is quite tolerant of others' views. And isn't that really the point of message boards like this - to share your opinions? If everybody's was the same, every thread would be like this:

Poster 1 : "I like (whatever)"

Poster 2, 3, etc. ad nauseum : "I agree"

And that would be pretty boring.

If you're looking for conflict, you should go to the Gamespot forums...

I don't care what I say or what people think of it. I only think about if the idea fits within the pertiview of very not ban-able.
Saying 'No' takes quite a bit of consideration apparently.

I think we all know that everybody would rather keep their opinion than change their minds - in general, of course. I think what we really need is respectful discussion. It's possible to argue about the vilidity of someone's points without it deteriorating to a who has the loudest voice contest. Of course, this doesn't often happen on the internet; perhaps because of the percieved distance between one poster and another. But there is something quite like this respectful argument at the escapist.

Somethin' special here.

I will say that some opinions do have effects in real life, on real people, and that disagreeing with someone and not being cool with difference of opinion is sometimes OK.

Then again, I would say that, wouldn't I? But regarding games, etc? Eh. I'm not seeing much point to getting all up in someone's face over a game, or movie, or TV show.

It's because we view our ideas as right, because they're ours. Since they're ours, if we say they're wrong we're admitting that we're fallible, something that humans don't particularly like doing. For the most part, people see themselves as the hero in a movie/game/story about their lives and we have been raised to see the hero be more or less perfect. Admitting error therefore means that we're not perfect, meaning either A) we're not the hero, or B) heroes aren't as perfect as we were taught, which would make us wrong again which goes back to believing we're above being wrong.
That's just my humble opinion, though. I could be wrong. I won't admit it, but it's possible.

Edit: Reread the question and realized that my answer doesn't address it properly. However, I'm lazy and it works well enough for me, so it stays. HA!

some people feel so strongly about something they will get pissy of someone disagrees (PETA, fanboys in general or etleast the stereotype fanboys, Prolife-ers) soem peopel CAN except others opinions but more often then not they see theyre opinions as right, and othes as wrong and they must prove ti to the otehr person for god knows why, maybe becuase they're twisted like that, maybe its because fo their self esteem. its just human nature.
