Forgive the ignorance, but could someone explain how an esports competition/broadcast works?

I know there are commentators for the given game, but how are they able to see the match? Are they in "spectator mode" within the same game? Or are they using monitors? Cameras shooting the players' screens? Does it change from game to game?

Also, the commentators provide color commentary throughout the match, right? Making remarks on the strategies, gameplay styles, etc. in addition to the core mechanics of the game? Who/what would be some good examples to watch? I imagine it's a difficult job to land, so how would one start in that direction?

Again, forgive the ignorance on the subject, but esports has never really been something I've tried before. I've been watching a lot of other programs in order to try and absorb some notes on being a commentator (major league sports, other video game reviews, programs like Iron Chef America, and so on) and esports seems like a logical option for me considering my hobbies and interests. Anyway, thanks for your time, and have a nice day!

Can't say for everything, but MOBA games have a spectator mode that shoutcasters use. And I'm pretty sure that other games like Counterstrike have the same.
