I love western RPG's. I have noticed, that people have posted several times, talking about how they are on their 2nd or 3rd playthrough within a few days of a game coming out. Usually such games require a massive investment of time, in order to beat the game. As such, those observations have inspired a question. As I thought about ME2, I thought of another question, and have integrated it into this post.

Question 1. When comparing ME2 and ME1, does anyone miss the micro managing of weapons and armor?

I have noticed several people saying that they did not enjoy ME1 micro managing. But personally, although occasionally tedious, I thought that the micro managing allowed for greater variation, and RPG "feel".

Question 2. How much of an RPG do you complete, on your first playthrough?

I ask this, because it seems that some people fly through RPG's. I put loads of time into playing RPG's, and yet, there are people who are on their 3rd playthrough before I am done with my first. I can only think of two possiblities. They are spending ludicrous amounts of time playing the game, or they are speeding through, skipping a good 20-50% of the game in the process.

Your thoughts?

Micro managemeent for me does not = a good RPG, good characters and a story do, therefore ME 2 is made of epic win.

I can only ever do one playthrough in RPG's.
I have 140 hours on my first Oblivion character (despite him not being very well planned out), but I've never played for any more than a few hours with my second and third characters.
It just feels like there's something missing with them.

I enjoyed the lvl of mirco managment with reguards to the weapons in mass effect 1, The lack of wepons in ME2 is a disapointment to me.

An RPG needs alot of weapons and gear, thats a big part of the RPG experiance.

ME2 feels like gears of war to me.

I don't miss it, especially now I don't have the curse the game for giving me the exact same goddamn ammo and weapon mods inside every fucking crate. The only real micro-managing you have to do is with your default armor, and that's if you wanna reap the various benefits that every piece provides. if not, then cool, you can still get through the game without much problem. That's not to say that the extra storm speed or shielding won't come in handy, but it's not imperative to mission success.

Usually when I play a (w)RPG I explore as much as I can on an initial run; I have this new game and I'm gonna try and see all it has to offer. I found a good chunk of places on Oblivion and Fallout 3 (really handy for the guild quests and other various sidquests, I tell ya. fuck running on foot), did a good chunk of exploring in Mass Effect, and other such crap like that. Usually on a second run, if I ever feel like doing one, I'll mop up for achievement purposes.

With a game like Mass Effect, the story is so enrapturing, that I can't be sidetracked by scanning planets for side missions, while there's loyalty to be gained, or party members to recruit. By contrast, Oblivion's story was meh at best, so I spent a bunch of time doing cool little side quests.

ME1 had WAY too MANY weapons and gear. Seriously, it had, a shit ton of items, and each is a +1 of 1 stat better than the one you just got, but that stat you need more than the ones which are worse
Now you can pick your favorite weapons in ME2, and stick with them. It's much better

And while on the subject of game length: I could beat Fable II 3 times in a week WHILE completing every sidequest available.

I liked some aspects of the inventory from ME1. I liked that you always felt that the next box you opened could have a nice shiny Colossus X armor for Wrex that you've been searching for. I didn't like that selling or omni-gelling everything took SO DAMN LONG. You also got way, way too many weapon and armor upgrades that did nothing but sit in your bags waiting to be sold.

I usually complete about half the side missions my first playthrough, maybe a bit more. I spent around 27-28 hours on ME2 playthrough #1.

Q1: While I do normally enjoy micromanagement of gear and such, it was done pretty poorly in ME1 and I do not miss it. However, I can see why some people don't like the streamlining done in ME2 and I belive Bioware should go with a "middle ground" option in ME3

Q2: Any and all sidequests I can find and any extra exploration I can find. Basically, all unique content that is in the game.

ME1 didn't have a lot of weapons and gear. It had FOUR weapons with 2-3 models for each. That's about it. Getting the same item with slightly bigger numbers tied to it doesn't make it a "new item". There's more of a difference between the two Pistols in ME2 than between all the dozens of essentially identical Pistols from ME1.

And if ME2 feels like Gears of War to you, you have my pitty.

I like the armour system in ME2 but dont really like the weapon system. I don't see why bioware didn't put in weapon customizing like the armour.

In rpgs i try to do as many of the sidequest as i can but i always miss some. i missed the romance sidequest in both ME1 and ME2 on the first playthrough (dont know why). anywho i'm 10 hours into my 2nd ME2 playthrough and the 1st took me about 30 hours. Good game over all but the end was abit, you know, silly.

This plus the fact that the ME2 system saves on going through lists of 50+ items to find one that is marginally better is exactly why the ME2 system is better. Well put.

I disliked the micro-management in Mass Effect 1, but I think they went just a bit too far with the streamlining in Mass Effect 2. I'd ideally prefer something in between the two, but closer to Mass Effect 2.

I am 16 hours into ME2 and haven't even finished assembling my squad lol. I did get annoyed in ME1 every now and then with micromanagement of inventory, especially when I'd forget to do it and launch down planetside with a full inventory, only realizing when it's too late. I did miss the inventory clutter in ME2 a little at first, but the more I play this game the better it gets. I can't really fault any of the decisions they made.
