I'm taking a look at this Gateway LT4010u for a friend and when I power it on the screen is just a mess of grey and white lines. I never seen anything like it and was wonder if it might be a broken screen or the vidja car went belly up. Any help is welcome.

Could be either or something in between. Most likely a faulty connection between the graphics and the screen which could mean a damaged cable or worse a damaged connection on one end. Really the best way to find out is to test with other components though that isn't always convenient. Check for warranty before you attempt anything.

Just my two penneth : i dont suppose you've got a spare monitor (or projector if you are flash) knocking about have you? If so, try plugging that into the laptop's VGA out and switching the display to the external monitor via whatever F-key shortcut combo applies on that model to change screen. If you still get the same issue i presume its GPU / mobo connection related... One to take to a proshop if thats the case, and that could be costly.
