Quitting video games

I'd been playing video games for as long as I can remember. They've always been a part of my life.

Two weeks ago, I quit. Indefinitely. I got tired of spending hours a day on something that wasn't productive at all. I got tired of spending more time and energy on gaming than I did on my friends, schoolwork, and my girlfriend.

So I quit. A lot of my (gamer) friends haven't been very supportive, which is understandable. I am fully committed though, and I haven't even touched a game since then.

Have any of you all tried to quit playing? Did it work? If it didn't, why not? Does anyone have any opinions or tips about quitting?

Why quit suddenly? Just lower your gaming time, iv been able to juggle a girlfriend, work, college, exams and gaming. Just be sure to remember what is important, going cold turkey is the hardest method of quitting anything.

Ummm, no?

Gaming site perhaps?

I've been forced to and didn't like it one bit before. Also gaming is meant to waste time that's pretty much the point.

I haven't really found a reason to stop. I do better in school with video games in my life.

I would die of boredom if I were to quit videogames. I would become emo and cut myself because of all the stupid shit I couldn't dodge by spending endless hours in front of the computer and losing myself in a fantasy world.

...why? I suppose if it harms your social life then it's a bad thing, but just don't let it get to that.

I had a great girlfriend (broke up for non-gaming related reasons), friends, a social life, and did college work all right on top of playing games and it was fine because I didn't let any one activity shadow over another.

I have tried to do this a few times, both did not work out too well for me. I have found that the only way to actually quit gaming (for me) is to get a job or do something else that requires a lot of ones time.

Lately I've been playing less and less but that's mostly due to exams are around the corner so I have to focus more on school. Also the fact that new games that are released nowadays really don't interest me that much.

I haven't tried quitting, though. Don't think you really need to quit unless it's a serious addiction. It's just a pastime, not a commitment.

I've tried cutting down, and it never works. Artificial impositions on how much I can play never lasts. At first, I'm able to cut down; but I always eventually rebounds back to my old ways.

Essentially, there's a disparity between who I am and who I want to be. The person I want to be doesn't spend hours a day intentionally cutting himself off from friends and family.

Nah, couln't stop playing games. I'd just feel like I'm missing out on too much.
Besides, you wouldn't stop watching movies or stop reading books, would you?
I feel like it's the same thing.

I tried that once, didn't last a month, good luck buddy, while you have a bunch of good points, it is all about balance.

I know how it kinda feels. I have not quit games, but its not a part of my life like it used to be, its just something I do when I am bored. Hard core gaming is stupid. But having something that you can do when you are board isn't bad.

Ive quit a few times over the years, until I finally realized rationing my time more efficiently was more worth while than selling my system and all my games.

I've never had a problem juggling everything and leaving some room for gaming.

Of course I have taken little breaks from the hobby, why I sort of skipped the generation between the Genesis & the Dreamcast, but that was just because things naturally popped up in my life. I still played the Genesis from time to time while my friends were playing PS1 & N64 but I didn't buy any new games for a while.

Just make sure you don't burn yourself out. Playing games helps me blow off steam (getting off a crowded subway inspires me to play some GTA and parking after traffic makes me want to play some Burnoot) so just make sure you have a healthy outlet for everyday rage & frustration.

I recommend martial arts: sparring can be more fun than any video game.
