There are few rhetorical devices as satisfying as a well placed quote. Little gems of poetry to perfectly summarize a running line of thought. Ever found a quote that just rubbed you the wrong way, something thats annoyingly stuck with you like one of those little burrs that get stuck in your clothes?

For me, its that infamous JFK quote. "Ask not what your country can do for you, but what you can do for your country." Why the hell is this popular? I thought the entire point of a non-tyranical government is to serve its people. If I wanted to support some bloated beast fat and well past its usefulness, I'd get married.

The "Over 9000!" thing is, I believe, poking fun at the poorly written dialogue in Dragon Ball Z.

OT: I hate the JFK quote as well. I always see it as shady rather than inspiring. Also, "Be who you want to be." So, if I want to be a mass murdering rapist, that's okay?

Not only is there that gaping loophole, but the kinds of people who say it don't mean what they say. What someone who says that cringe worthy quote normally means is, "Be who you want to be, so long as I'm okay with who you want to be."

In my sophmore year of high school we got a new principle. When he arrived, he also brought with him one of the stupidest quotes I have ever heard, and the entire school board praised it like a religious text.

"Actions have consequences, so make wise choices"

Thank you Mr. Principle, all my life I have wondered why whenever I ever made a bad choice that something bad happened afterwords.

I hate when people quote that " cake is a lie," thing.
This so much.

The only good thing that comes out of it is that it helps you see who has actually played the game, because they know that the cake isn't a lie. And it seems like the people who have played it almost never use the quote, only the people who heard it two years ago and thought "lol cake in portal" and don't actually know anything about it.

"Great minds think alike"

This may be true but people use it as a compliment toward themselves by trying to take it backwards. "Oh, you also thought about firing bottle rockets up you nose? Man, great minds do think alike". I started to coin "Similar minds think alike". That was stupid, tautologous, and said nothing. So I started saying "Great minds think alike iff the minds are first proven great".

One of the Dick Chaney quotes in Modern Warfare 2 bothered me:
"Principle is good, up until you lose."

If you're not fightings for your ideals, your principles, your "democracy" then you're fighting because your nation is a cancerous beast that most consume to survive.
Oh...

Any quotation from Sun Tzu's Art of War, as it's invariably applied to gaming where the person quoting is trying to sound mystic and knowledgable. It's bad enough when they're talking about RTSs, but when a guy says "All warfare is based on deception" when talking about sodding Street Fighter I just get annyed.

I disagree, the quote is meant to remind people that if everyone just relied on the system without actually putting anything into it it brings it down, and as members of your country it is your obligation to help one another. He doesn't say federal government, he just say country, which I see more as your fellow man than any bureaucracy.

I hate the whole 'a lock that is opened by many keys isn't a very good lock,a key that opens many locks is a master key'(does this count as a quote?) thing that people always use when arguing why girls are sluts but guys are studs. We're not talking about objects we're talking about people. It's a stupid metaphore.

"God's logic is better than man's logic"
What the FUCK!?
It's like it's made to devolve ANY argument about ANYTHING!
You can't argue if facts are now wrong!

And what do I care for a system which has nothing to offer me? Is JFK perhaps implying that I rely on the state, so I should therefore shut the fuck up and silently continue its upkeep? Well, that just sounds like the most hideous breed of blackmail.

Either way, its an ugly quote to me.

You'll notice the quote says nothing about a government. Last I checked, a country was the collection of people + the land they call their own, not the leaders they choose/are forced to have. But I digress, I don't have to deal with the (mis)use of that quote anyway.

Have you tried adding "as do tiny ones"?

For me, I will murder you in your sleep if you sincerely cite something from Umberto Ecco. Or the thing about beautiful snowflakes. It's a way to make people feel better by blatantly lying to them.
