So, on Sunday my flat was struck by lightning. My tv and sattelite box was killed, but somehow the red light on my PS3 gave me hope. And yet today, when I got a new tv, the PS3 refused to communicate with my tv. After trying every cable I own, I came to the sad realisation.

My PS3 has been killed.

It's not even the fact that I've lost months of saved games and data, it just feels like I've lost a friend. An intrinsic part of me has gone. I know some of you have felt this, so feel free to share your stories of awesome consoles, computers and handhelds that have passed on. How did it make you feel?

The closest thing I can relate to is losing a phone charger during a power surge
Though I did lose a lot of stuff back with my old PC when I managed to get some stupid virus that made me have to reformat. All of my music, pictures and videos that took years to collect, it sucked =\ Maybe I should start backing up my PS3 and PSP save files soon.

However, you may not lose your data. I believe PS3s use a certain type of Laptop HDD so maybe you can recover some of your data. there could be a chance that your HDD didn't get zapped.

Sounds like nothing is really going to help bring it back if you send it to a "doctor" (read system repair expert). i think its time to replace the loss you've felt with one of its many friends.

Here's to you, joy bringing PS3, may you always read the disc.

That said, losing something by being hit by lightning is a pretty unique way. I don't think I've ever lost something like that.

That was pretty impressive. I think it shed some grease when I played that for the PlayStation...

Ag, I know PS3 has many friends, but it was my one and only. Sigh. Well I guess it's time to go bargain hunting.

It looks awesome. Unfortunately there's no word of an international release..

I'm sorry for your loss :( RIP PS3

On the bright side, since it's Christmas soon there must be some good deals out. Have a hunt around and see what you can find.

Tis a sad day for you. I'd be lost if my PS3 croaked on me.. especially considering mine is one of those rare unicorn PS3s that plays everything so I don't need 2-3 Sony consoles cluttering up my entertainment center.

If I lost a console I would prefer to lose it to lightning because that's just one hell of a way to go.

My wii died by a poolstick falling on it. It's fallen hard and taken many beatings and it's sad to say that a mere poolstick is what did it in. Hell I accidentally swung a sword into my PS2 and it did fine.

I thought about doing that, but where would I get the voltage?

You have a point. I once elbow-dropped by PS2 and it just laughed at me. It must be this dang-flangit modern technology...

Yeah, my old was [:'( ] was one of the "fat" PS3s for a reason. Now I'll have to go and get a PS 2 as well, unless PSN is planning on porting all the old games.

Most likely the MB is just fried, I've never seen a surge kill an HDD. I'd try just swapping it into another PS3 of the same Rev.

I was expecting this to be like one of those 'My Xbox died' threads. Of course, this being a PS3 it wasn't a failure. IT WAS MURDERED. BY LIGHTNING. I feel for you bro. :'( and I'm sorry for your loss.
