Right, we all know that there's is a void in the Australian market due to a lack of an adult rating so I'll skim over the bitching and whining about that and get to the point.

On 12pm on Thursday the 26th of November there has been a rally organized in melbourne. Forgive the crappy facebook webpage, I've had no part in organizing it.

If you're a melbourne sider with time to kill and do not plan on acting like a psychotic moron then please make an appearance (unless of course you want to protect the kids from the bad adult oriented games, in which case you should probably be off protesting cars, alcohol, cigarettes and gambling).

So, escapist, I thought it looked seems like a good idea and I'm throwing my support behind it, however if there is any glaringly obvious reason why it's a waste of time (knowing that the victorian attorney general has the power to make an R18 rating for games in victoria without the consent of Atkinson) then please share it here. Basicially the aim of this thread is so we can discuss how to most effectively deal with the issue (I really shouldn't have to make this clarification, but I obviously mean peacefully) and hopefully promote this rally (as well as similar actions).

*edit* Purely to make me look like a douche for introducing it to the good people here, the date has been moved to Saturday, 28 November 2009. [small]something about people not being able to make it during the week as they have work[/small]

I do agree Atkinson has to go. Why don't they vote him out??

You could dress up as characters from 18 rated games and have a nice down outside were all the politicians do there best to ruin humanity.

He is the Attorney General of South Australia which is to Australia what strike]mexico[/S] the "deep south" is the the USA. They are insanely conservative and agree with most of the things he's for. If it was the entire countries decision he'd have been gone years ago.

I think you're confusing South Australia with Tasmania, but being Victorian it's understandable why you might be easily confused. :p

Jokes aside, he's not actually that popular here. He is just one of those politicians who are only noticed to the wider public every now and then. The reason why has does not get voted out is because he holds a powerful position in the Labour party, the current South Austrlaian government for those playing at home (he partly founded the conservative faction in the party), and therefore gets selected for a safe Labour seat which he won't be voted out from. There are alot of times when his policies are not agreed with here, especially when they are particularly conservative.

Also, from what I know, you won't be able to get an R18 rating in one state without getting in the other states. The OFLC that gives the ratings is a federal organisation and so any changes made to what it does needs to go through the whole 'agreed on by all the states' process. States can't have a seperate rating system.

However, I'm all for a rally to increase the awareness of why we need an R18 rating and try to put some pressure on the federal government to try and get round needed the states agreement, so good luck. I'd be there myself if I wasn't in the deep south.

Yeah, I can't imagine him being particularly popular, it would be nice if our system wasn't based around the "vote for the guy who's less retarded" system :S

Dude, do you kiss your mother with that mouth? I kid, I kid.

I wish I could come down and show my support, but I live in the U.S. so that would prove to be a pretty long drive. Remember, though- if you want to make a point, vote!

But I mean he's doing more harm than good in the end, games like MW 2 are given a 15+ rating, and are still have everything the American 18+ version does.

"I think you're confusing South Australia with Tasmania, but being Victorian it's understandable why you might be easily confused. :p"

Well, I might not have stated it in such terms but in fact South Australia is the most conservative state in Australia by some margin.

"Jokes aside, he's not actually that popular here. He is just one of those politicians who are only noticed to the wider public every now and then."

This is demonstrably not true. The seat of Croydon is the second safest Labor seat in the country. Two party preferred vote of 76% which is pretty mad. By any stretch of the definition, Michael Atkinson is very popular in South Australia. Ostensibly because his christian conservative values are a good fit for the local political landscape.

http://www.abc.net.au/elections/sa/2006/guide/croy.htm

In order to combat your opponent you must first know who his is. In this case he is not just the person who you would quite like him to be just because you don't find it convenient to recognise that he a product of an ultra conservative South Australia.

Voting him out just isn't really a feat that is likely. Particularly if those that actually live in South Australia are in denial about why Michael Atkinson wields the power he does. He might be Australia's problem, but it's only South Australians that can do something about it. Well not unless we change the constitution...

If I wanted to be picky, I would say that only proves he's popular is his seat, not the whole of SA. I would also say his seat is also an area where a high percentage of people traditionally vote Labour so most of the people voting for him are voting for the party not the person. Such is the way of our political system.

I didn't say South Australia wasn't conservative, we can be. The whole country is conservative. Have you not seen what the federal government has been like in the last 10, 15 years? What I meant is that, from my point of view anyway, he's not particularly popular with the public. He is certainly not widely mentioned in the public as a good politician in our government. But he does hold power in a popular government and so is not going anywhere soon.

Are you telling me this one man controls the ratings for the whole country but only one state can vote for his positions.
