So let?s get into the thick of it right on, what is an 'RPG'?

Well most of you will know that it stands for a Role Playing Game, but it generally gets attached to anything with a storyline that doesn?t fall under any other category. Adventure games can be similar and infact some can be called RPG, but they get separated as to properly define the games.

So what?s wrong with a RPG game? Nothing, but that can be said for any genre. This is pretty much what a western RPG is today. You start off just like everyone else, a nobody, but then great power is thrust upon you and you have only a few short months to achieve a near impossible objective. Then after battling through countless enemies you reach your destination, as a powerful warlord and strike down you final foe. Seem familiar? Almost all RPG games will follow this, and here?s the problem.

First of all, why are we the ones to do this, they always assume that there is only one or two people capable of achieving the end objective, which is you and your companions, which is nice and all but wildly inaccurate. No one can kill that many people without coming to serious bodily harm. What they should be doing is instead of giving your character one impossible thing to do, they should set your end goal right in front of your nose, but keep moving it back. So it is an achievable objective, just a hard one to get to.

Then we have the getting stronger phase. In most RPG games you are forced to get better items and skills as you progress towards your opponent, but in reality one swift strike to the back of your head with an axe will make it roll no matter what silly thing is on your head. Assassins Creed is a good example of how to get around this power struggle. Instead of getting loot and better armour and swords, during the game it gives you different abilities to help take down your foe, sure your sword gets stronger after a while but you?re getting better as well, it increases the actual players skill instead of just the character.

And number 3, the end boss. Lots of games have these guys, but most the time there just a regular person with a silly looking hat. There too strong for something that should be easy to kill, I mean a general of the army is a human too, So why does it take 20 minutes to hit him, then another 2 hours to kill him. It doesn?t make any sense, instead we should take games that don?t do that. having a boss fight doesn?t mean something wildly impossible to kill, just a challenging fight, think of Zelda, all the bosses had a pattern that you needed to work out. People are like that too. Use your head, in thinking, not in ramming.

So those are my thoughts on RPG's. I hope this gave you another way of thinking about the games you love and the ones you love to hate.
