Random or unintentional creepy game moments

Sometimes in games, there are moments where a game takes a turn for the creepy out of nowhere. A NPC says something weird, the music drastically changes, or even the entire mood of the game. So I'm wanting to know the personal experiences of Escapist goers.

One that has always stuck to me was the Castle Music from Super Mario World. The whole entire game from the beginning is so exciting and joyous, it makes you believe that Mario and Luigi have this under wraps. And then you enter the castle, that door slams shut, and the music starts. I remember how I first felt when I heard the music, Dread. It felt like the entire tone changed, and that, no, it wasn't going to be all okay. Peach is in danger, and you have to fight through these hellish castles to find her.

I love that song.

One thing that was creepy was what James says to you in the Citadel Embassies at the beginning of ME3. Holy hell foreshadowing much?

That wasn't unintentional. The whole level is meant to have a huge tone of dread as it's a boss fight against one of Browser's kids, everything is at stake here.

How could this havenot meant be creepy?

I pretty much labeled it under random though. Unexpected is a better word though. I realize it was meant to invoke that mood, i'm just saying it came out of nowhere.

This is definitely random, not unintentional, but it's in Super Mario Galaxy 2. I forget the level, but in one of the galaxies, if you go to first person mode and look up to the left, you see some figures staring at you. They don't move, and the are always there. Just watching...

In the spoiler is the image file showing what they look like.

About the... what are they called, Seekers? Green bug guys?
God damn I need to play that game again sometime.

OT: Maybe it was supposed to be creepy, maybe just somewhat spooky, but in Dark Souls, the cutscene before the Pinwheel fight just scared the fuck out of me.
Easiest boss in the damn game, except maybe the Moonlight Butterfly or the Asylum Demon, but scary as all fuck that one time.

Skyrim.

"Kill one person and you can solve so many problems. I wonder at the possibilities."

I didn't go back to Riften for a week.

in Dragon Age 2 as you get Isabella, in the church after killing her persuers she talks to you, and at the end of the conversation she essentially hits on you. now that doesnt sound creepy but the thing is shes covered in blood from the fight which kinda makes the sexy talk a bit... well *shudders*

Sonic Team TOTALLY had no intention of creeping us out with this (WARNING, BULLSHIT AND POORLY WRITTEN ROMANCE BETWEEN A HEDGEHOG AND WOMAN AHEAD):

My reaction when I saw that scene:

I don't think it was unintentional but the last story in Sonic Adventure 2 came out of fucking nowhere. While it was a little more dramatic than the rest of the series and it had hints of darkness (this Maria girl had clearly been killed, for example) the game still had a very sunny, lighthearted tone... then Gerald appears on the screens around the world and tells everyone that this is their death sentence. When he's done a soldier asks if there is anything else he wants to say, then shouts: "Ready!"

In the Japanese version of the animé you actually hear the gunshots. In the game it just loops, but it's pretty clear what happened.

And that isn't even it; then you have to listen to his diary, which... well, here's a quote:

Gerald Robotnik said:
I found Maria's name on the list of those who died when the ARK was shut down. She meant everything to me and I couldn't bear the thought that she died because of my research. I lost everything, I had nothing more to live for, I went INSANE.
So, yeah! Before he decided to kill everyone else he had suicidal thoughts! Y'KNOW! FOR KIDS!

Everyone always talks about Shadow and Sonic 06 being the games where Sonic tried to go all grimdark... and they were... but nothing in either of them is anywhere near as dark or creepy as Gerald's scenes. The fact that they came at the end of an otherwise fairly lighthearted game just makes them creepier.

They aren't dark. They're terribly written and....sickening attempts at being dark.

I never once thought we'd go from Mario levels of happiness to.....whatever the scene I just posted was.

Some franchises could work that way, others like Sonic cannot.

Aye, like I said, they tried... but they failed. It takes more than exploded buildings and PG-level cursing to be dark. Not to mention the awful attempt at a moral crisis with Silver.

To kill someone to save the world... is it really the right thing to do?
I'm not even sure what to say to that.

That one place in FO3 comes to mind. Unintentional however, is the Skyrim waiting system. It implies that our character simply stands there, unblinking for a very specific amount of time.

I'm one of the few people who like Sonic that say I still want to see what they can do with Silver. Sonic 2006 was a horrible debut for him but with the right use he could become the next Knuckles, thought that's pretty tough considering how they attempted that with every single character past him......

I have a thing for Telekinesis so...that might explain it.

I was really looking forward to playing as Silver when the game was announced, I love telekinesis, too and there aren't enough games that have a good TK system.

Silver was one of the reasons I was so disappointed with the game, actually. I can look past the awful story, but if the game had just worked then Silver's levels could have been really fun.

Mine personally was a weird glitch in Oblivion. I fast traveled to a town to where I was supposed to find a dead family that was killed by Goblins or something. When I fast traveled there, I found the four dead characters just floating in the air right next to each other in a kind of spread eagles motion, and for some ungodly reason they didn't have any eyes.

As I waled towards them, they all just floated backwards into Boulder and disappeared. I didn't finish that quest.

Also, what's kinda weird lately is I've recently gotten back into Mirror's Edge, and the game is actually kind of unnerving. There's sections where you're completely alone inside huge industrial caverns which are painted in ultra saturated colors. It feels... fake, but in a clever way. It's very haunting, and I didn't like playing it in the dark.

Tranquility Lane. So much yes. It was so random and grim. I was a lucky duck, and took the easy way out without any hints, or getting any blood on my hands. I blame the Chinese. Also the Pint-sized slasher, I found out about him before I went to Tranquility Lane. And it was just dark when I had to you know, you do that thing, on my second play through.

I swear the Creeprs in Minecraft are not meant to scare me as much as those fuckers actually do....
