Rape jokes, can they be funny?

Okay, first of all I want to say that I got the idea for this thread from the whole Penny Arcade debacle. To those who haven't been following it, the Penny Arcade guys made a joke about a guy being "raped by dickwolves" which a bunch of feminists took issue too because they thought being raped was "never funny." Gabe/Mike made a few snarky and insensitive comments, most likely because the comic had run comics about rape before and nobody cared, and started selling "dickwolves" tee shirts (which I think was because he thought the publicity would make good sales). The controversy, while slanted, has a rather large list of links at http://debacle.tumblr.com/ in case someone wants to read them. (note, going to the fucknopennyarcade link caused my browser to try and dump a virus on my computer, so be careful)

Now, I have never been raped, but I was repeatedly molested as a child by one of my teachers, which I personally feel qualifies me to speak on this issue. Perhaps I am wrong in assuming that being molested is similar to being raped, and if I am wrong, i would appreciate someone telling me why, because I admit that my perspective may be skewed by my autism somewhat, as well as the fact that I have come to the conclusion that I really deserved the molestation for being such a hell raiser as a child.

Now,I thought the comic was hilarious. Also, I personally believe that while rape may be a horrible experience, making jokes about rape is not wrong, any more than making jokes about murder is. However, I feel that the penny arcade guys mishandled the response. It would have been a lot better had they just said something to the effect of "Sorry you didn't find it funny." rather than making snide comments which came off as trivializing rape, even if that wasn't their intention. On the other side, the feminists are being rather unreasonable. This is PENNY ARCADE we're talking about after all, the same guys who joked about pedophilia and bestiality (and rape, albet less often) without raising a stir for something like nine years! This is who they are! I mean, if someone "Family friendly" did it, they you would be justified, but complaining the penny arcade guys are being insensitive is like complaining that Bill O'reilly is a republican!

Anyway, I'm curious as to what other people on this forum think, Agree? Disagree? Think I'm totally bonkers?

Anything can be funny, given the right context. There are some instances where things can be taken too far, and it happens a little too often in real life (one of the things a comedian must learn is how much is too much), but I don't think that applies to the PA case you are talking about. People make jokes about being raped on the internet all the time, I mean COME ON. It wasn't even really a serious thing.

As for you being molested, that sucks, I'm sorry about that. But I'm sure that if I was in a better mood, I could come up with something funny about it.

I think VG Cats can confirm this. In two related comics.

Sure they can, you just have to know your audience. In fact, I know one, but it involves a priest and three young boys, and I don't want to get banned/probation/flamed/ or generally trolled. XD

Rape, funny in some way? Well, you tell me.
Gang rape.
Any laughs?

Rape, murder, and abuse aren't exactly hysterical by themselves, but think of all the holocaust jokes floating around. Tragedy over time becomes comedy, better to look back and laugh then dread your memory, I guess.

People make dead baby jokes, and most, if not all humor is at someone's expense, so I got no problem with jokes.

People joke about death and other terrible things all the time.

So yes, rape jokes can be funny. I wouldn't touch them with a 7½ inch pole, though.

Yes, rape jokes can be funny.

Seeing as what is funny and what isn't is opinion absolutely anything can be fucking hilarious, just because you don't think it is doesn't mean it isn't to someone else.

Whether it's ethical to laugh about something or not may be debatable, but who gives a fuck about ethics.

Probably. It depends who you tell and their personal habits. Obviously a rape victim/family member of a victim wont find it too hilarious. Then again, someone who hasnt may find it funny. I find the Daniel Tosh Tosh.0 web redemption joke where he says Big Ben rapes him funny even though I dont think Ben did it or that rape is right just cause its funny in context.

So I dont know. Guess who you talk to.

Yes, but if you want to stay classy no, they are not.
If you're feeling immature or drunk they'll probably be funny but in a serious mood notsomuch
