Rappelz is a game made by gpotato, whom I consider the best MMO creator. Now, I'm sure people can fling much criticism at that, but the logic is:
A. All of the MMOs are free, with a "cash shop" option
B. Said cash shop just makes you look cool, and does not alter the game play at all. Thus, it serves as only a vent for those obsessive MMO players who need to have a McDonalds next to their house to uphold their consumption rate.
And these are "WoW" quality MMOs, not the "Urban Dead" 2D crap that doesn't even pass for an MMO. But back on topic.
Rappelz is a game heavily based on Pokemon, in the sense that every monster can be captured and turned into your loyal demonic pets. In an MMO setting this has a lot of flaws, such as how lag can get your pets murdered (it is very costly to revive them), but overall, it is a nice try. See that last word? Try? Yeah. That's it. Nice TRY.
When I began, I was going to want to make my own little army instantly, but of course that didn't work, you have to gain experience as they tell you HOW to play. This can be excused, since they don't want to confuse all the retards who pick up online games and think they are the same as normal games. That said, they have you "kill blah monster 5 times and return" many more times then it takes to learn the game, and it lost appeal quickly. That is, until I finally got to when I got my first loyal servant.
Proudly, I was told that what I needed to do, was to get a "card" of the monster, and then use another kind of card to capture the monster and put it in the card. A bit too complex when compared to what they have to do, but I just rolled with it and got my first pet--A demonic chicken. I wasn't complaining--I was glad I could sit back in the battles a bit more now. Not that that is much different--it's the good old "1 click combat". Now I had to keep my pet alive as well as fight. I also soon learned how hard it is to get these "monster cards". In order to get the "card" of a rare monster (in order to make it into a pet), you must get it out of a random drop. These come roughly every 3rd blue moon, and the whole pet system dies here, because having a flipping pet is not possible.
The game, no doubt, was based around the pet system.
The pet system failed.
Thus, the game died.
I'll "do this by the book", and sum it all up in a 10/10 system.
Game play: 5/10
Originality: 4/10 (they still ripped off pokemon)
Music: 8/10 (what? it was good.)
Replay: 1/10 or 10/10. Depends on if you're an obsessive MMO player who lives in his mother's house.
Overall: 5/10. A nice try at a new system, but ultimately not very fun.
