Seriously, though, check this out:

In short, a bunch of rich people are getting together to build floating cities in international waters so they can start their own countries free of laws or moral codes.
Anyone else getting bad feelings about big daddy's?

It depends- did they ordered immense ammounts of syringes? If so, then the world is doomed.

By "bad feeling" do you mean awesome? Because I totally get that feeling. I do get bad feelings about the whole "rich people starting city free of laws and morals" though, I wonder if they've played Bioshock? Seems like the exact same thing would happen, minus the plasmids... for now.

I love living in the Silicon Valley. It's the only place where you'll meet people crazy/rich enough to make shit like this happen.

heres a nice quote from the article
"no welfare, looser building codes, no minimum wage, and few restrictions on weapons."

so umm these seam like things you might not want to mix, especially because your building it in the middle of international waters.

this like many other things can only end badly, and video games will be blamed of course.

Needs to be under water with art deco architecture inside and out, that would be more awesome.

Edit, you sold me at few weapons restrictions.

Eh, billionaire invests a million or so...not a big deal.

Also, so many reasons why that wouldn't work. Are they going to be totally independant, or are they going to trade with people? How are they going to defend themselves outside a nation state?

Etc

Science without morals/ethics is a race car without a roll-cage.

...What? Why else would you create an Oceanic Mad Science Island?
But if they genetically create Real furries I might be forced to purge them from the earth with fire.

There will probably still be some simple laws like don't murder or steal. Mostly I'm assuming that these countries will just have absolutely no economic regulation. It won't work great, everything has to be imported. It'll just be a tax haven for rich people.

I give it a year before something happens and it fails. You can take the law away from the people but you can't untaint the stain that history puts on people's minds. They are all going to bring in their own notions of culture and normalcy and this will either cause the system to revert to normal laws (in order to seek order) or it will shift towards extreme lack of control and devolve in a "lord of the flies" way. Also, pompous much guy in the story?

This looks like a modern day Atlantis. Especially if something were to "happen" to one or many of the supports. Personally, I'd be too damn scared to live out over open water on a city / country supported by an oversized oil rig.

10$ says that they actually install an oil rig into one of these cities. It'd be an easy way for them to keep their cash flow going.

If they can pull it off, more power to them. I'd love to see more people do stuff like this.

Defense isn't really an issue for a billionaire, especially if he continues to make income. Resources would the main concern I imagine.

Well, this could be interesting...it could also be a way for these people to evade laws and conviction and potentially become dictators...or it could be a liberatarian utopia.
